I just put together a basket case motor and had to scrounge up parts from different model years. It now has 86 crank, 85 jug and center cases, 86 clutch, 88 clutch cover, etc...

I seem to think that there is a washer that goes between the kick starter spindle and the clutch cover in 1988, but I don't see it listed for an 88 on the parts microfish. 85-87 required a large collar...

Anybody know for sure?

I used a 86 cover on a 88 motor and I needed a special spacer that comes with hinson covers. Also the 88/89 kicker gears have a spacer built-in to them. Your situation is the opposite of mine, get the spacer you will be set.

I used the 88 kicker spindle and 88 clutch cover. In the space where there is a thick spacer/collar on an 86, it is built into the clutch cover on the 88.

My question is whether or not there is a thin washer that goes between the spindle and the clutch cover. My situation SHOULD be the same as a typical 88 or 89 setup...

There is a thin washer on 88-89 kickers. The parts manual left it out. The Honda part # is 90401-HA2-000. You need one between the clutch cover and the kicker gear.
