Well im in algebra 2 and i have a quick question about operations with fractions. If you have a problem like this..... 1/2 divided by 1/2, how do you do that? another one would be 8 and 1/2 divided by 4 and 1/4. Thanks

First, IMO it is easier to work with improper fractions, so convert them over before you do anything. Second anytime you have something divided by a fraction......... multiply the first term by the reciprocal of the fraction.

Here is an example

1/2 / 1/4 = 1/2 X 4

2 = 2

multiply by reciplrocal or cross multiply like said before and for the bigger numbers like 4 1/2 make it 9/2

here in mexico they teach us like this ....

the tortilla law.. this means that when dividing fractions you multipy the ends of the division and putin on top of the new fraction and the inner numbers on the bottom of the new fraction, then you do the simpe division.
when you have whole numbers and a fraction, you multiply the wole number to the botom of the fracction and put it on top of the new fracction and the botom numbers stays, you do this on both ends, and the you do the torilla thing ant that's that.

Awnser is 2

I don't know how to do it the correct way but i just do this.

8 1/2 divide 4 1/4......

4 1/4 times 2 = 8 1/2

so your awnser is 2 I do stuff reallY messed up so you might not want to listen to me.

sorry for the misprint of the first fraction.....

in the second one you can cross out the 16 on top and bottom because its like multiping for a nmber and then dividing by it.

Dont give him complex fractions thats crazyness for a HS student in most cases......

the proper way has already been said in this thread.... take the recipricol of the 2nd fraction and multiply it by the first fraction(which remains the same)

then in the mixed number just make them improper fractions and do the same.. simple stuff.. i miss easy math..

You sound like me, I have a really messed up way of doing multiplications by 9.

And don't be a cheater and use a calculator, actually learn the stuff and get an education. The future of this world depends on us and if we cheat our way through we're not going anywhere.

I try using one of those Texas Intrument type Calcs but I can't figure the darn thing out. So I just use the calc to do the basics.

thanks everyone for your help last night, looks like i got another question... lol.... How do you simplify - l4.2l? or l-7/6l? Also thers 2 questions that the instructions say "Which set of nymbers best describe the values of each variable?" The questions are.....

then number of stops N a commuter train makes on a certain day.

the average time per lap T it takes a race car to complete N laps.

I jus dont have a clue what they mean by those... Thanks Everyone
