I am attempting to adjust my valves. I took everythin off and began to measure the clearences. To my surprise i cant even slide my .010 feeler guage through. Is this normal? Im pretty sure my pistion is at TDC. I even measured at different piston positions and still my smallest quage (.010) wont fit through. Im just contacting my fellow mechanics to get advice before i do any adjustments.

Another question is that is it ok to have my clearences a couple .010 loose or tight? for example. exaust clearence is .028, is it ok to have it set at .030 or .026?

Thanks in advanced

did you make sure to flip the lever to take off the auto decompression system? That might be your problem. i made the same mistake my first time

I had this problem on my intake valves. You need to put in thinner shims and take your measerment and reshim.

i think your a little confused with your measurements. being .01 loose or tight is alot. i think you mean .001. you shouldnt need to remove the decomp either. it is very possible the your valve stem stretched somewhat and like havok said you need to go thinner on your shim.
also if .01 is your thinnest gauge you need a better feeler gauge set with more gauges. i believe the exhaust clearance should be around .011 depending on the year.

you need to be 100% sure you are on top dead center on teh compression stroke. if you are not then the feeler guage probaly won't fit in. your cam lobes will be facing backwards and up when you are on the compession stroke.
