I'm kinda new to the ATV world and had a few questions. I am looking to by a 1985-1989 honda trx 250r, I have been told that this is quad is capable of producing a lot of power. So, my question is if I bore one out to say 310-330 will run faster than a 400ex, or about the same? My next question is, is the stock 400ex a fast quad? The reason I ask is because my buddy had a susuki z400 and it didn't seem that fast to me. I could barely get the front end up. Sorry for being long winded or if this is a stupid question.

Welcome to the site, and welcome to this great sport, I am getting back into it myself I got me a 96 Honda 300ex and I used to have one about a year ago, its plenty fast for me.
My buddy has a 400ex that was stock and WOW it was really really fast. how fast do you want to go? 60mph+? or what you looking for?

I am not sure about the boring thing I got my piston today and taking it and my cylinder tommorrow to get bored out supposed to be bore .40 over.
so it be like a 307 or something, I have never seen a 250 in person so not sure what one could do.

not sure how fast I would like to go, probably just looking for more torque. So you say the stock 400ex was fast, huh? That's awesome. I always knew hondas were reliable. Is your 300 ex fast? Thank you for the reply.

Yeah the 400ex stock was fast, my buddy redon it to like a 416 and it was really really fast then but even before the rebuilt with me on it ( weighting about 250) it would pull the front end completley off in first and then try to come up some in 2nd and 3rd.
after the rebuild it would do the same but felt like trying to come up even in 4th and 5th and it does like 75 I think ... not sure.

I wish I could tell you how fast mine is, I have never rode this one, it was messed up when I got it last week, just got a piston and stuff in today for it. I hope to have her going by next week or so.

My other 300ex I used to have was fast enough for me. not sure about the mph. but it was fast stock plenty of power to pull me around. even me and my gf rode it( i know your not supoosed to ride 2 ppl on them) but it pulled us fine.

If you two think a 300 and 400ex is fast You might not want to consider a 250r You might get hurt I would put my money any day on a piped 250r against any kind of 3 or 400ex.:) I had a 300ex and have rode quite a few 400's none of them compare to a 250r.

If thats true then why are they so many 400ex and 300's around
How can a bike same size as a 300 but with a smaller motor be faster?
Well maybe I wont try toi find a 250 for my gf then. I know the 250 is shaft driven, is that what makes it faster?

Im hoping this is a joke and everybody is laughing at me but You are very confused a 250r and a 250ex are not a bit in the same category a 250r is a 2 stroke that is why it is faster than a 300ex the reason you see so many 3 and 400ex's is because they are still being made and the last 250r went out in 1989. hope this sheds a little light on the difference between the 2. :D

yea a 400ex isnt that fast, a modded 250r is fast. you can find bunch of 250r's on ebay for a good price and not fully modded out so they will be alright for you.

Holly crap! I thought I was on the wrong forum for a second there! Could these guys please take this conversation to another forum. The subject is 250R's here. There is no need to discuss 3 and 400EX's or bash them! Just my 2 cents!

who's bashing the ex's? They cant help it that they are slow compared to a 250r. whos side are you on anyway? this is a 250r section. there was a little confusion between a ex and a R but has been taken care of no harm in that.:)

Seeing this stuff still amuses me. I got my first 250R by accident in 1995. I had a blaster but wanted to upgrade to something faster and put a want ad in for a 250X - really wanted a blue/white one. A guy called me about a 250r. I always saw them in dirtwheels and any I'd seen for sale were really expensive and always raced/beat on.
This was an 88 done up with the paul turner port and pipe and carb. She was fast and awesome.

Even still to this day the only 250R's I've ever see are mine. When people see me riding it they always ask what it is and why it sounds different.

Mind you I haven't ridden every quad out there but compared to a blaster,300ex,400ex,warrior, raptor it's still the best quad I've ever ridden and most fun. But I really like 2strokes and besides the LT and banshee you can't find a good 2stroke qaud besides the 250R

So that's how the obsession began. If quad riders really knew they would be making them again, but people don't so honda doesn't either.

I just wanted to thank all of you for your responses to my question. I was actually inquiring to the 250R not the EX. Now I understand why it is much faster, because it is a 2 stroke. I was just making sure that I wasn't crazy for thinking that a 250 could beat a 400. Your respnses will actually help me in my decision, and I believe that I will try not to get a completely modded out 250.

After reading post after post about R's and how everyone loves them I decided I needed one for myself. Everyone who has one loves it, lots of power, handles great, lots of aftermarket parts for it, etc. I bought my R sight unseen and love it. I'd never seen or ridden an R until mine showed up in a shipping crate. After I put it back together and started it, I made one pass through a field and all I could say was "HOLY CHIT THIS THING IS FAST!!" I also just had the opportunity to ride a brand new 400ex for the first time with just an FMF pipe on it. Didn't EVEN come close to the power of my R. The girl who had the 400 decided to try my R out also, said the same thing I did the first time I rode it. "HOLY CHIT IT'S FAST!" You be the judge.

Wow, this thread is confusing from back to front. Let me try to clear things up.

The 400EX is a decent quad, but it's not the fastest in the world, especially if you think a z400 is slow. Between the two, the Z400 is slightly faster. However, the 400EX is probably the most reliable high-performance quad ever produced.

The 250r is indeed faster than the 400EX. Two-strokes fire every revolution, while 4-strokes fire ever OTHER revolution. This is why a 250cc two-stroke is faster than a 400cc four-stroke, because it has twice as many combustion cycles. However, they also pollute significantly more, which is why they are fading out.

And most 2 stroke wont idle good, they dont like to putt putt around they like to be WOT (wide open throttle) for the most part.
A moded 400ex would be the best bet I would say, I dont like 2 strokes myself.

Good Please carry along with whatever 4 stroke you have in a ex forum and leave the 250r 2 stroke people be with there plug fouling non idling bikes that dont like to putt putt around. If the 250r did come out and make such a bang there might not even be a 300 or 400ex today. so this discussion probally wouldnt be either. Good day

who needs to idle around?? :huh give that thing a good crack of the throttle and get moving!! :macho
