2006 marks the 20th anniversary of one of the most prestigious ATV races of all time, the 12 Hours of Pont de Vaux in southern France.

My third trip to the Pont de Vaux started with a short "vacation" at the Alpe d'Huez resort in Southern France, about 2 hours South of the track. I prefer to head over early to get adjusted to the 6 hour time difference before the race weekend starts.

The Alpe d'Huez area is a road and mountain biker's dream. You can rent a full suspension, disc brake equipped downhill mountain bike for a couple bucks a day and just thrash all through the mountains on perfectly kept single track.

A series of three lifts will take you all the way to the top of Le Pic Blanc, which has a height of 3,330 meters. You can take your mountain bike with you on the lift and ride down to the resort from the top, but you had better pack a lunch and some signal flares!

And when you get done beating yourself up in the mountains, you can go for a nice road ride up the most notorious climb of the Tour de France. It's nine miles of pure pain and suffering at a unrelenting grade of 8 to 10%. This year it only took me 1 1/2 hours (Lance Armstrong did it in 37 minutes!). I use this as my last workout before the race.

Now off to the track to get a look at the course and get the quad ready to go.

Andy Lagzdins
08-25-2006, 09:27 PM
The track stays the same each year, with the weather creating the only changes in the track surface. This is the track covered with grass before the racing started.

Andy Lagzdins
08-25-2006, 09:34 PM
This is the two-way tunnel jump which is barely wide enough for two quads to fit side by side. There are only six jumps total on the whole track, and these are two of them.

Andy Lagzdins
08-25-2006, 09:41 PM
This is a view of the two big tabletops in the back section that runs through the corn fields. These have got to be about 40' wide.

Here is the hairpin turn at the end of the longest straightaway on the track, which runs along side of the 120 pit spots. To give you an idea of the length, we ran 16-36T gearing on our 450r! A KTM950 hybrid quad was clocked at 180 km/hr at the end of the straight. The key is to find a braking point marker at the spot where you need to start slowing down to be able to make the turn, and hit the same spot every lap.

Andy Lagzdins
08-27-2006, 05:08 PM
The pits are located along the longest straightaway on the track, and 120 teams line up for a massive display of ATV race quads. Here is the official Suzuki France team.

Andy Lagzdins
08-27-2006, 05:14 PM
This is the #25 LTR450 ridden by French riders Franck Allart and Dimitri Vallet. It was totally set up with Fox Shocks, a-arms, and very clean light system.

Andy Lagzdins
08-27-2006, 05:16 PM
Check out the trick aluminum tank on the LTR450. I did notice that they had switched back to the stock tank for some reason by the final session of the race.

Andy Lagzdins
08-27-2006, 05:20 PM
Here is another trick looking LTR450. The Suzuki's were very popular at the PDV.

Andy Lagzdins
08-27-2006, 05:28 PM
It was good to see some familiar faces. Here is New Zealander Johnny Simons' team, which included GNCC regulars Brandon Sommers and Mike Novak. They were riding a YFZ450.

Andy Lagzdins
08-27-2006, 05:33 PM
Polaris was very well represented at the PDV, with multiple teams on a variety of Polaris models. This is the new quad display in the Expo area.

Andy Lagzdins
08-27-2006, 05:38 PM
Here is a Predator from the Polaris France team.

Andy Lagzdins
08-27-2006, 05:43 PM
I believe this is the trickest Polaris Scrambler I have ever seen.

Andy Lagzdins
08-27-2006, 05:46 PM
Looks like the front spindles and hubs are TRX450R with some nice looking shocks.

Andy Lagzdins
08-27-2006, 05:48 PM
High and low speed compression adjustment on the front shocks, oversize radiator, ProPeg nerfs, and of course a flame job on the side cover.

Andy Lagzdins
08-27-2006, 05:59 PM
This is the Arctic Cat display in the expo. I didn't see any DVX's entered in the race.

Andy Lagzdins
08-27-2006, 06:01 PM
Maxxis had a good display, and mounted alot of tires during the weekend.

Andy Lagzdins
08-27-2006, 06:32 PM
Elka Suspension is very popular in Europe, and the company sent support technicians for the first time to the PDV. Sam and Yan were helping out alot of riders over the course of the weekend, and their presence was appreciated by many. A handful of teams were running the new dampner, and it is set to be available to the public very soon.

Andy Lagzdins
08-28-2006, 05:57 PM
The France-based Moto and Co had at least six YFZ450's entered and their pit area was massive.

Andy Lagzdins
08-28-2006, 06:00 PM
All of the Moto and Co quads were nicely prepared, just like this one. Among their teams was the #4 machine ridden by Romain Couprie, currently the most dominant rider in France.

Andy Lagzdins

This is the Honda dealer display at the Quad Expo. We asked them where we could get one of those nifty tents and they told us they cost $4000.

Andy Lagzdins
08-28-2006, 06:34 PM
Honda had numerous teams and were well represented in the race. This is the pit area for the #2 and #3 Hondas.

Andy Lagzdins
08-28-2006, 06:47 PM
This is the #3 Quad Competition team Honda, led by French rider Cyril Lamet.

Andy Lagzdins
08-28-2006, 07:16 PM
This is the 450R of the Spanish Honda team that finished second in 2005 in the hands of the Ullastres brothers.

Andy Lagzdins
08-28-2006, 07:20 PM
It takes a very dedicated team of riders, mechanics, timekeepers, and pit helpers to make it all come together.

Andy Lagzdins
08-28-2006, 07:26 PM
This is the #52 Honda of Chris Murphy and Stuart Gubbins from Great Britain. This is the same quad that I rode last year. It was good to see a little DirtFirst support overseas. Thanks, Chris!

Andy Lagzdins
08-28-2006, 07:30 PM
The KIK Honda #11 machine was immaculate. It was so right that noone even had to touch it prior to the race. This quad was ridden by the powerhouse British team of Paul Winrow, Will Waggott, and Chris North.

Andy Lagzdins
08-28-2006, 07:34 PM
Street legal quads are a big thing in Europe, and here is a nice example of a big-bore street quad. This one uses a 950cc twin cylinder KTM motor.

Andy Lagzdins
08-28-2006, 07:35 PM
Here is another KTM 950.

Andy Lagzdins
08-28-2006, 07:47 PM
Duncan Racing and ATV World were the main reason I was able to do the PDV. Loren Duncan was the main backing behind getting the quad built at DirtFirst, and ATV World arranged the shipping over to England where they did the final assembly and brought the quad and all the spares to the racetrack.

Andy Lagzdins
08-28-2006, 07:58 PM
Our #12 quad was backed by DirtFirst, Duncan Racing, ATV World, Elka, Roll Design, IMS, Douglas, Team Ind., Vortex, Hinson, ProDesign, and Motorcycle Factory. You can check out the buildup article at http://www.atvriders.com/atvracing/pontdevaux200612houratvbuild.html

Andy Lagzdins
08-28-2006, 08:00 PM
The other riders on my team were British Championship contenders Ricky Tordoff and Jason MacBeth. Ricky's dad and my mechanic from the GNCC's, Jim Quesinberry, took care of the wrenching duties.

Andy Lagzdins
08-28-2006, 08:04 PM
The other ATV World team was none other than the Banshee of Doug Eichner and John Mitchell, who have won the PDV the last two years running.

Andy Lagzdins
08-28-2006, 08:08 PM
ATV World has always prepared the Banshee for this dominating duo, and this year they pulled out all the stops, as 2006 was the twentieth anniversary of the race and also the last time they would campaign the machine that has been so conquering at this event.

Andy Lagzdins
08-28-2006, 08:11 PM
As many components as possible were finished in gold anodize and powdercoat. You will not find a nicer Laeger Banshee anywhere.

Andy Lagzdins
08-28-2006, 08:16 PM
Would you believe that a group of aerial stunt pilots did a display right over the track? It was like nothing I have ever seen at a quad event!

Andy Lagzdins
08-28-2006, 08:19 PM
The jets were soaring right over the track, and performing all sorts of aerobatics.

Andy Lagzdins
08-30-2006, 06:19 AM
This is the line for tech inspection. All quads were sound tested and checked over to make sure they were safe. The PDV rules call for extra chain protection around the rear sprocket area, and also a rear numberplate attached to the grabbar and facing side to side. It is also mandatory that you bring your fire extinguisher to tech.

Andy Lagzdins
08-31-2006, 06:36 AM
On Saturday morning was the youth race, its good to see the future of the sport. The kids ran the same track, and served to wear down the grass a little.

Andy Lagzdins
08-31-2006, 06:40 AM
About 2 hours before the race was to start, the sky opened up and poured down rain. It had rained every night while we were there, and continued on race day. Everyone was scrambling to get their quads setup for the muddy conditions.

Andy Lagzdins
08-31-2006, 06:47 AM
This is the exit from the track onto the pit road.

Andy Lagzdins
08-31-2006, 06:49 AM
It was interesting to see how everyone was taping up their quads for the water and mud.

Andy Lagzdins
08-31-2006, 06:51 AM
This is the #97 KTM/Walsh/Quad Briel team headed by Canadian MX'er Jasmin Plante.

Andy Lagzdins
08-31-2006, 06:54 AM
The KIK Honda team used a pair of Madonna's panties that they got off Ebay to deflect some of the splash.

Andy Lagzdins
08-31-2006, 06:59 AM
Some teams didn't feel a need to waterproof their quads. This is the YFZ of the Yamaha France team, ridden by prevoius PDV winner Gregory Lassaigne.

Andy Lagzdins
08-31-2006, 07:58 AM
At the rider's meeting everyone was informed that the weather was being monitored with a plane, and that the skies would be clearing up right at race time. The race would start 15 minutes late.

Andy Lagzdins
08-31-2006, 08:31 AM

120 quads line up on one side of the start straight, and the riders run from across the track LeMans style. The track was saturated with a lot of standing water.

Andy Lagzdins
08-31-2006, 08:54 AM
The start went off without incident, and Romain Couprie got the holeshot with Joe Maessen behind him on the #113 YFZ. Jasmin Plante put the #97 KTM into third.

Andy Lagzdins
08-31-2006, 09:00 AM
The mud and roost was everywhere, and riders were spinning out and sliding off of turns everywhere. Teams were stopping for googles, which I have never seen before at the PDV. The pit straight is so long, and has such a strict speed limit that it takes about 1 1/2 minutes to pit for googles. If you stay out on the track without googles, the roost from all the other quads at such high speeds is treacherous, and one direct shot to the cornea could keep you from from being able to continue.

Andy Lagzdins
08-31-2006, 09:07 AM
Here is John Mitchell going out after switching with Doug Eichner. Powerwashing the radiator, controls, and brakes was mandatory at each pit stop. We were able to go for 65 minutes before stopping for fuel. We ran on reserve the whole time, and gave ourselves a 5 minute cushion in we would need to go an extra lap.

Andy Lagzdins
08-31-2006, 09:09 AM
Here Doug gets hosed down after riding the first (and sloppiest) portion of the PDV.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 11:00 AM
Everyone was eagerly awaiting their riders as the night session wore on. The five hour session from 8pm to 1am is the turning point for many teams. A good, durable lighting system is crucial.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 11:05 AM
This is one of our pit stops. While Jim is powerwashing the tank cap, headlights, radiator and brakes, Tony is refueling. Ricky is preparing to get on as soon as possible.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 11:12 AM
Unfortunately this would be our last normal stop, as the transmission on our Honda started to hit false neutrals and finally lose third, fourth and fifth gear. A massive hole in the crankcase just under the countershaft sprocket was the final blow to our PDV effort. We nearly made it to the halfway point, with a total of 93 laps.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 11:15 AM
The Duncan team of Eichner and Mitchell were making up time after finishing the first session way back in 30th place. Having started the second session 5 laps down, they steadily worked their way up to the front and won the session and moved into 2nd place overall only one lap behind the leaders. Here is one of their pit stops. Doug is informing John about any changes in the track while the team cleans, checks, and refuels the Banshee.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 11:43 AM
As Sunday morning arrived, the racing line had cleared off considerably as the mud and slop was gradually pushed off to the outside of the turns. There was room to sneak by other riders in some of the turns, but most of the passing occurred on the straights, where two parallel lines had developed. As you came out of the turns before the straights you had to look ahead to see which lane was clearer and had faster moving riders on it and make a quick lane pick.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 11:48 AM
The teams started to pull their quads out of the impound area, making their way to the start for the third and final session. The session would go for four hours.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 12:07 PM
The start would be in much dryer conditions than the earlier heats.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 12:10 PM
The #6 Belgian team was having a great ride on their YFZ450, with few problems and good luck. They were leading the overall by a lap over the Banshee of Eichner and Mitchell.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 12:13 PM
John Mitchell would be starting the third session, and he had a look of determination in his eyes, hoping to make up the one lap deficit.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 12:16 PM
Doug Eichner gives the #1 Banshee a final look over. No repair work on the quads is allowed in between sessions. All work must be performed while the race running.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 12:19 PM
This is Joe Maessen, the lead rider of the GYTR Yamaha team who had helped put them in fourth overall going into the final session, only two laps down from the leader.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 12:29 PM
The #10 Honda of the French/Canadian Team Arsene Racing was running strong in the fifth overall spot.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 12:49 PM
The Golden West Cycles/Laeger team headed by Italian champion Sergio Gilli and American Worcs racer Josh Fredericks. They rode an LTR450, and were coming back from early difficulties.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 12:55 PM
All the riders prepare for the mad dash to their quads.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 01:11 PM
The horn sounds and the race to the machines is on.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 01:12 PM
Everyone tries to get on the dry racing line as soon as possible, and its all single file down the start straight.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 03:15 PM
The riders hit the long straightaway on the first lap and are already spread out. Romain Couprie gets the holeshot followed closely by another fast French rider Gregory Lassaigne.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 03:18 PM
There was plenty of traffic on the straightaway, and it gets a little crazy with everyone braking and sliding into the hairpin turn at the end of the high-speed run.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 03:32 PM
The surface of the track was becoming very hard-packed and made for some great sliding action at the end of the straightaway.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 03:34 PM
Here John Mitchell pushes hard to make up time on the overall leaders.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 03:38 PM
The #110 LTR450 of the Official Spanish Suzuki Team was running well, and started the final session in 7th place overall.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 03:43 PM
The German Quad Briel sponsored team was riding a TRX250R chassis machine with a KTM 525 motor in it.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 03:45 PM
The two-way tunnel jump had widened enough to allow some passing over it, but it was still a very risky move.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 03:47 PM
The timekeeper and a mechanic from the Eighner/Mitchell team keep an eye out for any sign of a problem.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 03:54 PM
The #10 Honda of Team Arsene Racing kept putting in consistent laps and stayed in the top ten overall. The track had become riddled with braking and acceleration bumps.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 04:01 PM
The #112 YFZ450 of the ATV World/Duncan Racing team from Great Britain. Sean and Lewis Preson were the pilots along with Richard Johnson.

Teamwork plays a big part in endurance racing. Here is a good example as six mechanics work on the #91 French Quad IDF Team LTR450 while another pit helper attends to the rider's needs.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 04:23 PM
Just when it looked like the Duncan Banshee was in control of another PDV win, disaster struck in the from of a sheared flywheel key.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 04:27 PM
Doug and John were forced to push the Banshee from the opposite end of the track, as no outside assistance is permitted other than the team riders. When they got the quad back to the pits, it didn't take long for the team to find and fix the problem, but by the time they managed to get back on the track they had lost eight laps to the leading Belgian team.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 04:30 PM
The #6 YFZ450 of Team Piron held the lead to the finish and became the first four stroke to ever win the PDV.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 04:42 PM
The #113 YFZ450 of GYTR Team Yamaha UK ran a calculated race under the supervision of manager Richard Cole to take the 2nd overall position, three laps down on the winners. The team was originally going to include American MXer Kory Ellis, but the team was able to put in an outstanding performance on their own.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 04:47 PM
The #75 LTR450 of the French JSL team took the last spot on the podium, and demonstrated the reliability of the new Suzuki.

Doug Eichner and John Mitchell put in a valiant effort to charge back to the front after the flywheel key replacement, but only had enough time to work up to fifth overall.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 05:47 PM
The #16 Honda of Team Joe Bar finished sixth overall and was the highest placing Honda.

After the quads had finished doing the laps on the course, I took these photos to show what was once a flat grassy track.

Andy Lagzdins
09-04-2006, 05:55 PM
The ground became so hardpacked it started to break away. The mud that covered the track on Saturday moved aside and the remnants of over 100 sets of furiously spinning tires pressed the dirt together like concrete.

And the winners- the Belgian Team Piron! The team consisted of Guy Meertens and Alexandre and Stephane Piron. They are the first team to win the PDV on a four stroke. They rode their Yamaha YFZ450 for 11 hours and 56 minutes, doing 207 laps at an average of 59 kph. It appears that the four-strokes have taken over the event, as the only two-stroke to be a threat to win, the Duncan Banshee, will not be ridden in 2007. So begins the next generation of the Pont de Vaux 12 hours.

Great coverage Andy.

I have participate too at this race.
We were still on waiting list 4 days before the race!! but we were ready.

No chance for us too. We were at 19th place after 8hours of race, it was great for us,but we broke the motor in the last round. I have participate 6 times, but I don't have the chance to do a good result.
