I'm in the market for a new quad. This will be my first. I have very little seat time on one.

I was initally attracted to the 400EX because it had the electric start and reverse. But now with the 450R coming in electric start I am questioning the desicion on the 400EX.

I will be mainly riding on 5 acres and a dry river bed that is close by. I will also be taking it to the little sahara in oklahoma.

My question to you all is. Do I really need the reverse qear?

Not a must. I've had times were it would come in handy, but never times were it was a must. Most of the time you can just lean forward and spin it around no problem.

I think you'll find that no matter what you buy you'll always be wanting more power. As for the elec. start and reverse, they both seem to be more luxury than anything. I always ride w/ a friend so when I get stuck I've got someone to help me get out.

The 400ex is an awesome quad. You can do so much to one and they are great for learning and will teach you the most. I had a 400ex for a while and it taught me a whole lot and as soon as I sold it I bought a yfz450. I had plans to get a 450r but I love the seating and the feel of the yfz450. The yfz450 is quick, awesome on the trails and will last you. My yfz is very reliable, don't listen to those people who say that this and that aren't reliable. It's all how you take care of it and keep up with the maintence. I would go out and take a look at 400ex, yfz450, 450r, ltr450 etc. Try them out and feel whats more comfortable for you.

I'm fairly new to the area and I'm moving from Stillwater to Cushing with in the next month. So, no riding buddies yet.
