Hello, everyone. I have been wanting to get a 450 ever since a co-worker bought his 05 model. so I broke down and picked one up today. 06 black. the only 'mod' so far is the nerf bars i bought. I got sidetracked on the way home from the dealer and didn't even get to ride it yet. It's been a while since I've owned an ATV, but I've been whetting my appetite with buddy's rides..built 400 EX, stockish 450R, etc..

I plan on breaking mine in a little, get used to the handling and such, then start with the HRC kit and a full exhaust. After that, who knows...My co-worker has already decided he needs to order more parts for fear that I will outrun him, we'll see.

Ben

I'll try and snap a pic tomorrow.

ahh I remember when mine looked like that, all shiny and new.....

I would say get the shock revavled and a rear link then do your HRC and exhaust.....the suspension will make you faster.....I love my DeRisi Racing revalves......they are a great bike, good luck with it

I wouldn't get the HRC kit if you are going with another exhaust anyway. Just get the cam if anything, and that's only if your riding style matches that cam.

Cut the lid, drill out the crankcase breather, stick a new filter on, and buy the needle and jets seperately. That's what should accompany the cam and exhaust. :D

yeah, i got the kickstart after reading several complaints online about the electrics start models not liking modifications (not starting unless the battery was fully charged).

As far as the shiny-ness...give me time it will get broken in just fine.

Everybody keeps telling me that the suspension is the next step on these, but I'm going to have to research a little more on what I will need for how I ride.

Definitely going to get the HRC kit, but would really like a different exhaust...maybe a slip-on to the HRC headpipe? anyone have any suggestions? i'm really liking the carbon canister mufflers, but also the Ti Yoshimura looks good too. Does anyone know of any companies that use a ceramic coating on their exhausts?

suspension work should be next...it doesn't matter what style of riding you do...a better suspension always makes you faster and handle better....especially with the buck you will feel with this machine...the rear will buck up on you in woops and sometimes off the face of a jump.

one of the best things you can do, and you may thinnk that since you are not racing, you don't need one is a steering stabilizer...they make a world of difference...i always thought that they would be a waste of money fro me since i don't race and am not ever ona track...wrong...i have one on my wifes 400ex and had one sitting at home waiting for me before i went to pick up the 450r...

I agree with suspension before motor mods and pipes. Get all three shocks revalved or aftermarket then a stabilizer. After that start working on your motor. You won't be able to use all the power in that motor being stock with that suspension let alone having an HRC and a pipe. Suspension is the single best performance upgrade you can do to your quad hands down.

Suspension first, I actually just put my stock pipe back on and took out the baffle so i could sell My white Bros aluminum pro system. Then i can get a new rear shock to match my front, If you just rejet for an HRc encap that will be all the pipe you need.

Yeah, I experienced the 'buck' a few times while learning to jump this thing. I thought I was going to bite it on this one

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i149/audioguru76/4Wheelin017.jpg

then I kinda got the hang of it and got a couple good ones like this

then the 'buck' caught me off guard and i got one like this again

Gotta stay on that gas up the jump and not let off :)

Very nice pictures...looks like a quality digi cam was used.

Nice pics... and choice of bike! Definately get the HRC kit. That will hold you off for a while with the engine. I love mine... very strong and powerful all the way through. Only thing other than the kit that I did was cut out parts of the skeleton for the airfilter, I modified the endpiece that comes with the HRC tip, and I bumped up the main a bit.

As for the plastic, there is a spray made by Maxima that I use and it works wonder. Keeps the plastics looking like new, and doesn't just wash off like armorall... plus the stuff smells like candy LOL!

I think that your buddy is gonna be in for a surprise.

Pics taken by my wife with her new digi (canon a620). There was also some video shot that day, but I haven't seen it yet.

I know that you gotta stay on the throttle, but it was a little un-nerving the first couple times...esp. after watching one of the other riders go end over end about 5 min earlier. I'm still learning my limits on this thing. Unlike this guy (another co-worker riding my other buddy's 05 450r) I'm not quite to that level yet.
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i149/audioguru76/4Wheelin021.jpg

or this one (who happens to be the one that flipped 20 min prior to this photo)

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i149/audioguru76/4Wheelin043.jpg

I'm pretty sure that the HRC will satisfy me for a while. Right now in a dead drag race I can holeshot my buddy but he will pull past me when he gets to the top of 3rd. He's got the 05 w/HRC, FMF slip-on, 13t front sprocket, and running race fuel. I'm all stock, no baffle, on 93 octane...

Concerning the suspension, from what I understand, the aftermarket companies tailor the valving for specific types of riding. What will I be looking to do for a general upgrade? Basically my riding includes a little of everything, trails, drags, jumps, and the riding area I go to has several MX style sections with whoops, banked turns, and so on. Do I need full replacement suspension pieces, or can a guy be satisfied with just have the stock stuff revalved?

If your not racing just go with the C&D Revalve and Respring

and approx what should I expect to pay for such a thing? i went to the website and it's all under construction.

Having your baffle out is killing your performance.

Seriously!? I would have to think that a less restrictive exhaust would perform better. Are these single cylinder motors significantly different than the inline 4's that I've been modding for 10 years? Fill me in.

Wait... I may be mistaken. Did you remove the entire endpiece/ baffle set-up and are running it completely open, or do you still have the enpiece with it? With the complete baffle/enpiece out your bike there is just way too large of an opening in the exhaust for air to flow appropriately. You most likely have gained a small amount of bottom end, along with a better sound, but your top end is dead. Especially if you are running stock jetting, if so, your engine tuning is way off and you aren't feeding the engine the amount of fuel that it needs. Either way, you should bump up your jet. In the process remove the airbox lid if you haven't done it.

I cannot believe that I cannot remember how the stock endpiece is designed LOL.

Here is a pic to show what I mean. I know it is an 05, same idea, though. Look at the bottom left picture. Does your pipe still have a centerpiece like that through your exhaust, or did you just remove the whole thing and just replace the cap?

audioguru76
09-10-2006, 08:03 PM
yeah mine is like the one on the right except I have the stock cap like the one on the left. the endcap is still there, but the baffle guts are in the toolbox. it def has more bottom and is wicked loud. I just bought a dynojet jet kit and should be here in a couple days, so I can play with that.

thanks...and I LOVE it! I work for a Honda dealer and bought one 2 weeks after they were released. I have about 17.5k miles on it now and have probably about 6k miles towing.

450ERRRRRR!

I'd forget the Dyno jet kit and just get the Genuine keihln Jets from you Local honda parts counter. I've tried a 45 and 48 pilot jet and both were to rich and stock seems about best. Replace the stock 120 main with a 170 and that should be close to perfect. Also your stock needle is non-adjustable and should be replace with the HRC needle or with a CRF450 needle(3rd clip) thats what a lot of us are using. Take off the lid or cut a hole in it and replace the stock filter with a Uni or K&N.I chose to cut a hole and slip over it an old pair of pantie hose just to help catch the big stuff. I also got the Prodesign intake which gives it a real secure seal.
I did just what you guys are talking about. I let off the throttle just a little while going over a jump and took a little flip over the handle bars. Good thing I was wearing a helmet and chest protecter. The front tire ran over my arm and took some skin off along with leaving the imprint of those stock knobies burned into
my forearm. Have a blast on your new R and be safe.

yeah, i bid on the Dynojet kit and then hoped for someone to outbid me on them....no one did. But I can always just resell them.

I should receive the HRC kit tomorrow and I'm still debating on what exhaust to get. I'm also going to go with the Mod Quad filter kit. I plan on installing it all at once so I can rejet once and be done.

you will be very happy with a stock suspension upgrade...i know derisi racing adds a higher rate spring and revalves the stock shocks to your weight and riding style just like the aftermarket shock manufacturers do.

derisi and gt thunder also have a new rear linkage(only changes the forward part of the linkage). it lowers the shock travel in the frame and takes care of that kickback or buck. c&d does essentially the same thing, but they do not add a rear link.

lonestar_r had his shocks resone by derisi and let me tell you, they are a worlds of difference over the stock settings. if i remeber right he was about $150 cheaper than every one else too. my shocks will be sent somewhere over the winter...i am pretty sure it will be derisi, but...i may find someone just as good for a cheaper price...

i took the baffle out on mine and it backfires, now its back in... id rejet if i were going to run w/o the baffle.
