Ring Question....

I couldn't convince my buddy to buy a new piston for his Rancher, instead he bought just a ring kit. My question, is the OEM rings looked all the same.

The new ring kit has 2 different colored compression rings. One is a polished appearing finish and the other is a flat black color. They are marked R and RN on the other.

Which one is the top compression ring? Just taking a guess, I though the polished ring was a moly ring and probably was the top compression ring and the black one was the bottom compression ring. The oil rings are obvious.

you're right, the colored ring should be the top and the black ring is the second. it should be cast iron and more rigid than the top ring. and the letters face up.
