I use a tapered carrier on my 400ex and it has outlasted a double row 3X.
It is able to take pressure on the bearings sideways better than the double row. If you only ride going in a straight line a double row bearing would be just fine.
One thing is that you must NOT overtighten the axle nut. If you do, then you will trash the bearings.
Only hand tight is all that it needs.

...... and the only downside of a tapered bearing carrier is that it doesnt have quite the chain adjustment as the double row has.

Generally, I'll reccomend tapered for MX, TT, Flattrack, and twin row for XC, Trail, Dunes, and Recreation for the reasons above.

I run a durablue twin-row carrier on my 300ex.

Just from observation, twin row bearings tend to last a little longer, and are much cheaper to replace. But.. im sure that's due more too the higher maintenance requirements of the tapered bearings.

Disclaimer: I'm not an expert though.. the above is simply opinion.
