well i just got my hrc kit in my 450r and im running a removed box lid now....well i dont really care for the stock filter, i know they filter great n all, but i dont want to have to clean it everytime i ride....so i was thinking about a k&n with an outerwears, but my dealers mechanic said not 2 that k&n suck not to run that filter on my 450r...so what does anybody reccomend...ive had a 400ex that had a k&n filter on it for 4 years and never had one problem with it...i cleaned it when it got dirty...and so on...and to this day the 400ex is still running with that k&n on it

There is nothing wrong with running K&N if you are happy with them. If you are concerded with cleaning the filter, a foam filter can go much much longer between cleanings than a K&N. I like my UNI filter, has something like 40 hours on it before I cleaned it, spotless in all intake tubes.

It was a different story when I ran a K&N on my warrior. But to each his own. I only run UNI now, but I'm also lazy and go longer on cleanings. :D

yea but i know that i was told by the mechanic that i need to pretty much clean the filter every ride considering we aint had no rain here in months and its so damn dusty here....and i know if you continually wash and clean a stock filter they will wear out and begin to tear etc....

I run the stock filter and yes you will have to pretty much clean it after every ride when it is very dusty. My soultion was to buy extra filters. I have three, they are alot cheaper than a K&N. I paid $12.42 each plus s/h at www.servicehonda.com I just rotate the three, sometimes I have to change it after every ride, but I never go more than two rides without changing it. You should see how dirty they get. As for cleaning them, I use the Twin Air Bio stuff. Clean up is a snap especially if you use their cleaning tub and oiling tub. I had a K&N on my 300ex and cleaning it was a pain compaired to what I have now. If you ride in really dusty conditions I don't see how a K&N will not get as dirty as a foam in the same conditions, but I've heard that they will allow more dirt to pass through them than a foam filter will. I also run an Outerwear airbox cover and I put one over the snorkel too. It seems to help cut down on the some dust getting in the airbox.

I like the stock filter also. I have a K&N and UNI, and I can't tell any difference in performance. The stock filter seems just as good. Any other opinions.

the filter posted is 6 layer, when K&N has 4 layer; plus, the flow in cfm is better too.

i prefer to clean my K&N compared to the foam filters. i just think its easier but thats my opinion. if u were happy with the K&N on your 400 then go with K&N again. as for power wise im pretty sure all the filters r all about the same. one thing i dont like about my K&N is it seems like it eats up outerwears. they get all torn up and destroyed. does anybody else have this issue?

I run no airbox lid so i know about a dirty filter, but I found somethings that help it not get as dirty at all. I run a k&n filter with a outerwear, and an outerwear airbox cover. Its the same as running no lid but your filter doesn't get quite as dirty as fast. If you clean your airbox the right way before you put the velcro on the velcro will stay on for a long long time. check it out. you can run the setup with a uni,k&n or even the stock filter to keep it cleaner longer. I'm sure somebody is gonna say its junk. its not. for 20 bucks it works good.

sure- a site sponsor is great and can get other filters, but not the custom filters i'm getting made. these filters are not "shelf" items and take many days to be made, packaged, and shipped. Quality not quantity.

whats the process in cleaning one of those chad?

spray with K&N cleaner and rinse with water.

I use the big red coffee can filled with ha;f gallon of cleaner- dunk the filter in for an hour or so, then pull out and rince.

but just a spray mist on approach is conservative approach most likely....
