Just curiuos, my father may be purchasing an older 2001 XR400 dirtbike for me and my brother. I was thinking to myself, hey, if I bought this dirtbike off my dad and used the engine in a 400EX frame, I'd have a quad for myself. Here's what I'm wondering.

Are these engines the exact same, as in the same power output, mounting brackets, etc? I heard they were, but I want to make sure before I go threw and buy some parts for it. Also, has anyone ever done this? If anyone could help that'd be great, thanks for your time. :)

The XR engine is a little bit of a faster engine (I think by maybe 4 - 6 hp). As far is it going in, I am pretty sure that it would be a cake walk to do; however, why wouldn't you just keep the XR intact and just buy a running 400ex. Then you have two good bikes.

I agree, keep the XR in one piece, xr's are fun as hell to ride.
