I have a JE 10.8:1 and a HC stg 2 and I detonate badly on the best pump fuel available in my area (91 octane). I run ~100 octane (91 pump and VP 110 mix) to prevent the deto. Seems to rev a bit faster too--especially on the top end. I account for the reving difference by the more performance oriented distillation curve of the VP-110.

If you're not detonating on whatever fuel you're using now then a higher octane provides no real benefit. If you run your engine hard in hot temperatures and you're jetted for best power (right on the edge of lean) then a higher octane fuel will provide additional deto protection. But if your engine doesn't deto under the worst of conditions then don't bother....
