I was adjusting tire pressure when I took a look in the operators manual for my 400ex. It said to run the front and rear tires at 4.5 psi if I'm reading that correct for general, all purpose riding. That is way low. I took one of the tires down to like 6 psi and it looked like it would fall off the rim if i tried to ride it. Rightn now I have all four tires set to 11 psi and that still seems a bit low. Any suggestinos would be helpful guys. Thanks!

It is deffinately not low, 4.5 is about the average pressure for all around riding. I put my fronts at 5 and rears at 4. they should seem pretty flat, you should be able to put your knee on them and have them sink in with weight on it. You are running way too high. The centrifugal force when riding will keep the tire round, and the low air pressure will allow for rocks and other crap to push the tire in instead of popping it. It is a pretty sure thing thata the Honda manual knows what its talking about. Unless you are riding on a street or solid packed dirt that is as hard as a street than you want about 4.5

thanks red! it just seemed way too low at 6 let alone 4.5 but I'll give it a try What are the downfalls of running higher pressure? uneven wear? i'm not jumping it really at all, i ride bmx so all my dirt jumping goes down at the trails. thx again.

i run about 5.5 in the front and 5 in the rear. if its really muddy or snow ill drop down to about 4 or so for some extra grip.

From what I'm hearing 10 is too high. I thought 4-5 psi was low also but that's what the manufacturer says to run them at. I also just bought new tires for the front and asked the honda dealer while I was there and their computer actually said 4.0psi. Kinda low but that's what's recommeded for all around riding. Granted, if you're riding on the street alot you might want to go a bit higher than 4psi but who rides on the street most of the time?

I have 4psi in my fronts and ~2psi in my rears. Any more than that in the rears and they "crown" a lot in the middle. Of course they are 6 ply 22's as well...

For XC Racing I run
3-4 PSI in the rear
4-5 in the front

For MX I run
8 - 12 in the rear
10 - 12 in the front

Just play around with the PSI and see wht handles better for you.
