well iv had both and took them to identical places and really they are similar in nasty stuff its just that i would prefer the first gear off the ex anyday anywhere over the R (because first gear on my 450r blows) all in all the R seems more sportish but i give comfort points to the ex, in fact id still have the ex if honda didnt put reverse on new ones and that gave me the out of date feeling i mean if honda was gonna change the ex the shoulda did motor and suspensionwork but thats another story, in my opinion i say the 450r does alright in woods riding

just my thoughts

I have a 450 but i had a 400 before it. The 400 has alot lower 1st gear and doesn't stall nearly as easy. If the trails are ones that you can stay at least 1/2 throttle all the time then the 450 is the best choice but if you have to got slower up difficult trails then i would stay with the 400, the 450 hates to be lugged and will stall easly if you aren't careful

As the others have said the 400 is better if your in really tight technical stuff. If they are for the most part fast trails or you like to clutch alot then you'll be ok on the R.

My R is geared high and I still ride woods. I do prefer my Ex in most tight woods anyday, but soon as you can call for more power on straits or in more open trails I miss the R's power quickly.

I still have both also,

the 04/05 where tall in first gear the 06+ are a little better but
none of the R's like to put.

you had the 400ex so you know it handles great with good power

the 450r compaired to the 400ex is like
a camaro compaired to a corvette

both are fun and capable, one is just on a higher performance level
