1996 dodge ram 318 5spd. When I come up to a stop light and push in the clutch (say about 2000rpm), the rpm falls and dies. But if I slowly let the rpms fall (using the gas pedal), it idles fine. Any ideas? Just had the battery and alternator check, and they're fine. I'm thinking a vacuum leak, or TPS.

Haha I have that picture too. 300,000 miles on the origional drive train. The only repair that has been done is intake gaskets. Anything can last if you keep up with maintence.

We had this exact same problem on an 87 Ford pickup. Like you said, it turned out to be nothing more than a simple vacuum leak.

It could be a vacuum leak, but it also could be somethng else. Without a little more information, I'm just guessing. Here are a few possibilities......

1. Tune-up parts are worn out and the ignition spark is too weak to sustain sudden idle.

2. IAC (idle air control valve) is partially stopped up with carbon buildup and is not responding fast enough to sustain sudden idle.

3. Fuel injectors are dirty and have a poor spray pattern.

4. Vacuum leak (as you already suggested).
