I recently bought a 400ex and the clutch lever is hard as H%$L to pull! I think the cable might be too short anyone ever had this problem?

cable aint to short, it is just dirty and needs lubed, possibly replaced. try lubing it with some chain lube first. if that does't help a new one is only like $15.

Like Underpowered says, It's probably just dirty or it needs to be replaced cause they get cooked where it runs so close to the exhaust head pipes.

If it is a stock perch/lever it will be harder to pull. I would suggest buying a new perch/lever like an ez pull, and lube the cable. I did this on mine and it is a world of difference. I love how easy it is to pull now.

It looks to be a new clutch cable and a new lever, could something inside the casing where the clutch is be causing this? Is there some spring that helps engage the clutch?

it could be something with the clutch itself, and yes there are four springs that push the clutch plates back when you release the clutch. that the clutch basket cover off and see if everything looks in place. It could be a tweaked spring.

Before you start tearing into it replace the cable.

the prvious owner might have installed stiffer aftermarket springs. that will mae the clutch harder to pull

Mine is the same way now, its most likely the cable like evrybody mentioned above. I got a new cable and a MSR "adjust on the fly" lever from Rocky Mtn. for like $40 bucks...

I had this happen to mine, The clutch would get hard to pull, so I just kept spraying cable cleaner on the top (by the lever) and on the other end (by the motor). It would work for about 10 hours of riding, then I had to lube it again. I did this for almost a year until I went to pull in my lever when I was in a mud hole, and and then the cable just snapped. But like everyone else has said, replace the cable.

Where did you order it from and how much did it cost?

Replace the cable first. Easiest and cheapest. Also the 400ex has five springs on the clutch, and I doubt that stiffer springs would make that much of a difference. Most of the "stiffer" springs I've run were no different than stock. Worst case scenario your clutch basket has deep grooves in the fingers causing the clutch to be difficult to disengage, which would require the purchase of a new clutch basket.

Installed the MSR AOF perch/lever and a new Motion pro cable. This thing ROCKS! I suggest to everybody to replace the stock rubbish. It is like a new machine, now I wont get arm pump from the clutch...
