I just got my motor back from the shop where they put a new hotrods crank in it and they ordered a gasket set for the hole motor and it came with new valve seals could I put them in my self or do I need a special tool?

thanx

You need a valve spring compressor. There are ways to get the valves out without one but you need the tool to get them back in.

Ebay, autoparts store....anywhere that sells tools.

In my experience, I've had better luck with this type:

Versus this type:

If they have specific names I'm not sure what they are.

That top one just looks like a C-clamp, I wonder if one of those would work instead?

Not really. The end that pushes on the valve retainer is sort of hollow-like so you can access the retainer's keepers. You have to push down on the outside edges of the valve reatiner while still allowing access to the center of the retainer.

Here's another style. Notice the close up of the one side--it's "hollow" so you can get to the center of the valve retainer while pushing around the edges.

best type there is. much easier to use witht the leverage style clamp than a pure c-clamp style.
