Hey today I updated my PC with a 2 port USB 2.0 PCI Host card, and It works perfectly fine. But after my computer is on for a little while, it all of a sudden shuts down! Why is it doing this and how can I fix it?? The computer is running perfectly when its on.

Try taking the USB thing out, and see if it runs alright. If it does then there is some problem with the USB thing. If it doesn't then you messed something else up with the install possibly.

Is anything plugged into the new card when the computer shuts down? If so unplug it and see if the computer shuts down then. If it still shuts down unplug the card and see if the shutdown continues.

Also post what computer it is. Please post the power supply power rating and model number if possible.

Its a Sony Vaio, Model pcv-rx540. Honestly, I have no Idea about the Power supply, I cant find detailed specs online, I may have to open the tower to find out.

I took card out and yes its running fine now...this is frustrating because USB 1.1 SUCKS!

I would take the card back to were I bought it. It sounds like it could be "bad".

if you loaded it fine and it still not right i would have to say its a powersupply... ..can you open the case and see what the powersupply is?

Power supply is a little small, but this device should not pull that much power. It looks like that powersupply has a little dust in it. Get a can of duster and blow it out. It may be a case of the power supply over heating.

If you plug something into the card does the computer shut off immediately?

No it'll run for about 20 minutes then shut off. Do you think my computer is over heating??? Because I'll turn it back on and it will shut more frequently.

I have the usb card in right now, I dusted out inside of the tower and the power supply *cough-Cough!* I also put a fan in with the tower hopefully it will help it run cooler...

Make sure no cables or wires are hitting any fans, especially the fan on the CPU. Thats the small fan that sticks up off of the motherboard on top of the processor.

Run it with the side cover off and watch. Im leaning towards a weak power supply if thats not it.

Here this fan.
It must run or the comp will shut down in a few minutes. Blow it out with compressed air too.

my guess without looking at it.. your power supply does not have enough power to power that card... usb2.0 is powered ether thru the motherboard or thru a plug on the power supply if the system lacks power at anytime as a preaction it will shut down. most of those sony's had a 250Wpower supply wich only gives you enough to power the system and no extra's.. the only other thing is a heat issue... try putting the card in a diff pci slot to increase the flow of air... and close the case back up the system runs cooler when closed..the fans then create a vaccuume in the case to get the warm air out

last but not least i think SGA has a good idea that the cpu fan could be blocked or running slow
