Serial Number Checks?

Does anbody know the way to get serial number s ran to check if it's been stolen or not? I found a nice old 250r for sale on a dusty back road and the price he quoeted to me just sounds way to cheap! Any advice would help tons. Thanks in advance!!!

Write down the vin and call your police department. They can run the vin for you, just tell them you want to have it checked before you make a purchase. I do that with every bike I've bought and if it doesn't come with a title, get a bill of sale. With a bill of sale I can run down to the secratary of state and have a new title made even if the machine never came with a title.

that's a good idea, to call the police dpt to have them check the vin for you. so simple, but i never thought of it.
