I was looking into getting one last year, here is what I found out. You need a video camera with the right inputs, I found there are few that work, another way to go is a digital video recorder, At the time I was looking they wre around $500, Since then the prices have come down. You will need a remote button to turn it on and off, search the web for more info and pricing.

I dont remember who makes it, but they have an action sports camera. Its pretty small video camera, and comes with its own helmet cam. If I were you I'd look for that.
