Ok, my current mods are in my sig. I have it down to a 416.Thats 87mm right? Going with a JE piston 10.8:1 on ebay for $150 bucks. Going with a cam also, leaning on the Hotcam stg1 so it wont "chug" in the woods ect. But still tossing around the idea of a stg 2. Cometic gasket kit. Do I need anything else? HD cam chain? HD studs? Also where to get them if needed. What should be done to the head? I was going to do alittle home porting myself. Thats about it, any info would be great!

416 kit as described

HRC cam

CRF cam chain

Lightened Flywheel

Stay away from home porting, let someone who has the expierence do it.

LOL Ok so Im no porting expert. Where to get the HRC cam? Is it a drop in? Will I need rockers? Also where to get the flywheel? Do you anyone to do the port work that will not rob me? Thanks!

Colby at C&D usually gets me any part I need so he could be one of the calls you should make. Discussing what you want in the end with a few builders is the first step. Then make a decision on who to buy what from etc.

A slightly ported head IMO is better then a full race port for someone just looking for all around power, but I try and stay out of alot of the technical stuff regarding engines on the internet because so many either have varied opinions or so little actual knowledge on the subject it isnt worth getting into a debate:p

Thanks for the info!

After building a 416 here is what I would suggest. Sell it for as much as you can and buy a yfz for 6K otd

not to steal the thread but what is the advantage of the lightened flywheel?

Believe me I want to! I have my eye on one now, but the money aint there. I have a Cobra mustang that sucks up all my cash and gets mad when I spend it in other places-LOL

For the most part it will allow the engine to rev a touch faster. Some engines respond well to this, others prefer the stock flywheel weight.

colby at C&D does a pretty nice head port for a reasonable price

I just want to save you the mistakes I have made. First I built a 416, then a 426, After going through all of that, I still needed more power. With the money I spent on the two rebuilds I could have bought a yfz

Thanks man. I know what you mean. I look at the stroker kits and then Im like just go get a 450 dummy . I need a top end anway, so I figured why not punch it out alittle and throw in a cam while Im there. Ill be doing all the work myself except the the machine work. I said above I was going to try alittle port work but who knows. This is on the cheap, just the needed stuff to not break down...

The breaking down part is the problem. When you do a higher compression piston, you really neet to also install oversized cylinder bolts. They tend to pull out and blow the head gaskets. Thats why I went from a 416 to a 426. I had good luck with Ross pistons and hotcams. Still my advice is the same buy something faster.

Where do I get HD studs from?

Dune Surfer

I think I got mine at rocky ridge racing, I think sparks offers them also. Don't do your rebuild without them

I'd agree. Don't rebuild with a high-comp piston without them. I got mine from GT Thunder. If you have a local machinest install the studs be sure to specify you want the new stud holes tapped with a roll form tap. A degree of strength with the HD studs comes from the use of a roll tap instead of a cutting tap.

Thanks guys, What did you pay to have the machine shop to drill/tap for the studs? I just want a general idea...Should I also get the 450F chain?

I think I paid $90 to have mine done. It solved the problem of them pulling out. I you going to go this far you might consider going even higher compression, I hated buying race gas, but thats the price you pay for high compression..

If youre only going to be running a 416 10.8:1 piston I doubt you will have any problems pulling stock studs. Most people only have problems with that when going over 12:1 or with 440 big bores. Here is what I would go with if youre building a 416.

-416 JE 10.8:1 piston
-Cometic flexsteel gaskets
-2002 crf450 timing chain
-Port and polish performed by professional to match your choice of cam and exhaust. Ive heard great things about DASA headwork.
-new oem valve seals/stems while you got the head off

I have the 426 and didn't know about the HD bolts b4 i went to install everything,, Nothing has pulled out yet.

BUT,, I also DON'T ride my quad super super hard.. I go fast and all but don't race.

So far all the suggestion given to you seem to be right on.. I had and bought my JE piston, rings, Stage II cam, CFR chain from C&D
My cylinder came back looking like brand new. Oh I had it re-sleeved too.

Thanks guys. Here is the list I have going so far...
JE 10.8:1 piston for 416
Hot cam Stg.1 cam (probly stg2)
Cometic gasket set/ steel flex gasket set
Probly valve seals
HD Timing chain
HD studs
All from C&D also
Port and polish $175 three angle valve job $65
Colby recomended a Stg 2 Hotcam but I do alot of woods riding and I dont want it to chug and buck. What do you guys recomend?

Im just wondering what the cost of all that is so far, just parts since your doing all the labor.

Parts from C&D
JE 10.8:1 piston for 416 $120
Hot cam Stg.1 cam $136
Cometic gasket set $40 for our steel flex gasket set
Probly valve seals $5 for all four

Labor from C&D
Port and polish $175 three angle valve job $65
+ If I get the HD studs and to Bore out

So how was the bottom end on the Stg 2 cam? I dont want anything too radical. If the Stg 1 is better than the stocker all the way throught the rpm range I will just go with that...
