Ok, I've looked at stats and dyno's and all that and I think I'm going to get a YFZ. I need to know if you have to have an aftermarket suspension on it to race or not. Also, is the pipe realy ase restrictive as they say it it is, If so, is there a way I can make it breath better.
I know I'm going to have to put an aftermarket suspension on the 450R, and the powerup kit to make it a comp quad. That's like $2,000 after I spend 6 on the quad. If I spend closer to 7 on a YFZ and I don't have to do much to it, than I think it's going to be cheaper.
God bless you.:)
If you are talking about XC, you won't need aftermarket suspension for either the TRX or YFZ. It will be a better ride and you can probably ride faster, but it is not necessary.
As far as the exhaust; yes, the stock is very restrictive. A slip-on would probably be your best bet.

Ok, so all I would need to do is for Honda, put HRC powerup kit on it. And for Yamaha, get a pipe, re-jet it, and mod the air out? I think I would go with the Honda. Thanks for the help man, I think you saved me some cash. God bless you.:)
What kind of racing are you going to be doing?
What class are you going to be racing in?
I'm going to say XC

XC racing, World Off Road Championships Series.
C or B class to start.
I have no idea how good/bad I am though. I need to work on starts, but I think I'm fast on the track. God bless you.:)

Yes, there is no doubt that the YFZ is less tipsy, but I think with tires that don't grab so much, the 450R could be pretty close to the YFZ. The 450R also has a bit more power for less money ($350 for a powerup kit compared to another thousand for pipe, jet, and air). So I think I've decided to get the 450R. Unless something more wicked comes out in the meantime. God bless you gyz, thanks for the advice.:)

You do know that the YFZ has the equivilent of the HRC kit for FREE? It's called the cam mod, you can either take the airbox lid off or modifiy it, and take out the spark arrestor and/or get a different end cap. Which is exactly what the HRC kit is for the Honda, except you have to pay $$ for it. I wouldn't count the YFZ out on that. So actually you have it backwards, the YFZ has more power for FREE, while you have to pay $350 for the same exact thing on the 450R. Just saying;) .

Ok, no Honda, all they do is butter thier quad up to make it sound better. Ya, Yamaha does that too, but at least everything they say about there quad it true. I don't know, I just think that Honda is kind of dihondest. I just don't like to be lied to about that, or anything else for that matter. Thanks Toads. God bless you, take care, ride hard and smart at the same time.:)
Yep, you can spend 350 on the HRC kit, or spend 50 bucks tops on the Yamaha.

Yfz450's cost more here in California, so you would have extra money to spend on the HRC kit, also almost every person in this thread is probably a yfz owner so of course they will say yfz450.
As for honestly I think Honda is alot closer on their exact weight of the quad, other than that what has honda been dishonest about.
Oh and by the way I own a yfz and recognize some of you from yfzcentral :D .

Ya, I know that probably everybody is a YFZ owner or has ridden one after being on a 300 or 400. Honda lied about the wieght of there quad last year, it was more around the 175-180 wieght class. Then they say, "We were just trying to get a more acurate wieght mesuerement this year." Then they say it's the most powerful best handling compotition ATV ever. Ok, it might be the most powerful (who knows), but not the best handling by any meens. I know I know, I'm probly being knid of anoying, but I absoloutely hate lying. Well, I think I'm letting my anger get a bit of a hold on me, so I better stop before someone sews. God bless you.

I can honestly say I'm not biased towards Yamaha though. I've owned Honda before (loved my 400ex, hated the 450R) and ended up making the switch to Yamaha because it was what suited me more. I have yet to ride the '06 and above 450R's so I can't say anything about those machines, although I am very intrigued to ride one. I was just letting him know that it's not true that it's cheaper to get more HP/TQ from a 450R when the YFZ has those FREE mods, except for the price of the jets of course.
If you can't ride both of them then I honestly cannot help you decide which one is best for you. That's how I decided which 450 I wanted, rode both and it was a no brainer for me. I admit that the 450R was more "comfortable" but that wasn't what I was looking for, if I wanted that I would've gotten a utility. The YFZ had that amazing hit of power that reminded me of my beloved Banshee, but yet had plenty of useable power. Try your best to put some decent riding time on both of the 450's and make your decision from there.

I had 400ex also and loved it. I didnt get the 450r over the yfz because I got a 05 at the time and the honda just wasnt cutting it. Now that you sit a little lower on it and they added more power to the engine, it should be pretty darn close to the yfz.
Each one has their good and bads, I personally cant stand working on my yfz seems like to replace 1 thing you have to take 4 other things off to get to it. Maybe the 450r is the same way, but it seems like they did the homework a little better on stuff like that. the 400ex was like working on a 69 chevy truck vs a 2006, all kinds of room to work on them.

Honestly what I see at our XC races............Yamahas are usually first to the first corner ,but, Hondas are usually first to the last one.

So your saying the yamaha has more power, and then I guess that the honda riders are better riders???
Seriously the better rider will win on either of them.... Ride them all and pick the one that your most comfortable with.

I ran my buddies 450r in an MX race, abosolutely hated it. The suspension sucked IMO. The suspension is much better on the YFZ. The power is nice, but nothing compared to the YFZ. My YFZ is about as stock as you can get, and the 450r had a pipe and filter, and I know the YFZ is a lot faster. My buddy thinks my YFZ is about as fast as his piped LTR (not joking either).
My biggest complaint, being that I ran MX, was the stock tires on the YFZ lol. I can't get the freaking thing to slide in the corners when I want it too....that was the good thing about the 450r....but no, then again, it already had aftermarket 18s on it...
I'd def. take a YFZ over a 450r for woods or MX. Just a lot nicer of a quad. Nicer built IMO. It's not to small for me at all, and I'm about 6'4...my friends say I look perfect on it....I love it. I can just throw it around with easy...jumping is so much fun...I just want MX tires!! haha...
Go with the YFZ. More money, but worth it, IMO.

In my experience, this point is part of Honda's genius (I'm speaking generally here). They've got a knack for getting the little details right that you never notice until you start working on them.
Nonetheless, I'm still almost sure I'm going with a YFZ....HURRY UP AND SELL, 400EX!
