A couple weeks ago I rode a 2004 450r, and I found it really hard to kick start. not like it didn't go down at all, but it went down slowly. I think you guys will know what i mean. I"m use to kicking over dirtbikes and they are so much easier.
I'm debating on a possiblity of a 04' 450r and am wondering if i got it what would be the easiest way to help me kick it over.
I know its sounds dumb, but the kid that owns it has trouble starting it.

O, and it was stock BTW

how heavy are you? i haven't ever kicked one over that was 'hard' for me? the crank bearings might be going out of the one you rode making it harder to turn over.

ok well, yeah i didn't think about my weight but I'm pretty damn light so that could make a big difference.

I lost 40lbs and now I weight 140lbs. I now have trouble starting my quad when it's cold. Hot it fires right up. My 220lb neighbor fires it right up 2nd or 3rd kick. It takes me 10 or 12 when it's cold.

i'm 125lbs. and if its cold i just put the yellow choke lever up on the carb use hot start and usually 1st or 2nd kick it fires right up no probmlem.

im 205 and i can kick it sitting down but if its cold or hasn't been run in awhile i just throw on the choke and she barks up first couple of kicks...also make sure you let it build compression to cause i used to kick it over alot and then started letting it build up abit of compression and made a big difference...

i can sit down and kick my 04 450r, grow a pair and learn hot to kick it. also turn the choke on or pump the throttle a couple of times, beleive me it helps.

I know it has been mentioned already but I can also kick it sitting down, cold or hot. I am 210 and have a low end cam (holding more compression) and a 12.25:1 piston. So hit the gym and work on legs pushes or whatever. lol

well i weigh 130 and 14 years old and i have absolutly no trouble kicking it over...but when my dad and my uncle tried to kick it over they both thought it kicked really hard and couldn't hardly kick it over..they were not used to it and i said that was the reason..so maybe it's just causeyou wern't used to it???

same deal with me starting my friends bike

i find it very easy to start. i had a harding time kicking over a yz250f than a 450r. you need to work on your technique and it will be easier.

I'm 150 and I can kick it sitting down.

Weight doesn't mean anything, just hold onto the bars :P

These things are super easy to kick, if you can't do it ur just weak :P
Or your trying to kick it straight down, it has to go forward before it goes down.

They usally arnt that hard to start... ure crank bearings going out have nothing to do with being hard to start... but u guys that just slighlty kicking it over 3-4 times and then decide to kick it hard are just loading the chamber with fuel and making it harder to start:D

I am 155 and have no problems, but thinking back to when I went to check out my 450 the first time, I couldn't start it ... it was because I never kicked a bike over FORWARDS before ... there is a bit of a difference to it if you are not used to it, but you will soon get it. Sit down and pull hard on the bars ....

DONT GIVE IT THROTTLE!!! i tryed that and it kicked back and my knee hit the throttle i had a bruise over my whole knee and limped for weeks. i may just have a defect but every time i give it throttle when trying to kick it it always kicks back

sounds to me like the valves need adjusting or the decomp lever is out of adjustment

well mine has never been hard to start. i have complete motor work and can kick it sitting down without any real effort.

My wife has an 04 and its starts fine and runs great. A little weak for a 450(compared to the WR) but its fine. The crank has gone out in a couple I know of but valves haven't been a problem.

That shouldn't matter with a decompression mechanism. No matter what compression it should still theoretically kick over the same.

I know exactly what you mean and it looks like most of those who responded don't read before they answer. It does kick through slow, it surely doesn't "snap" through like a two-stroke or even an old four-stroke. It almost feels like something is dragging, but this is normal, you'll get used to it. It almost feels like no matter how much leg you put behind it, you can't kick it over any harder or faster.
