If I was to build a 250r from the ground up using parts from this and other sites which year would be the best to build? will parts from all years interchange? motors interchange into other year frames?? would it even be worth building one like this?? I did it with my 300ex and it came out alot cheaper than buying one complete..Same with my hybrid.. anyone know on this stuff??

I know the 86 motor was the most popular as I believe there was something about it, I dont know if it was more reliable or made more power or what, but almost every really built up R has an 86 cylinder and they are all sure to put that in.

i'm not totally positive, but the 88-89 had a clutch update. I have an '89 and It absolutly kicks a$s

All watercooled 250R motors mount exactly the same including the dirtbike motors. The '85(ATC)-'86(ATC/TRX) motor is a shortrod motor while the rest are long rod. Dirtbike motor in a quad frame = VIRBRATOR ON WHEELS because they are not counter balanced.

If you are going to be racing the project you will be better off finding a used aftermarket frame. If you go OEM get one of the '88-'89 frames.

If you want to build a hybrid, the yz400/426 fits in a 250R after the correct adjustments are made. CRF motors are too tall for 250R frames.

Before you do anything you need to decide if you want to build an "R" or a hybrid!! If you want more info on the "R". you might want to do some research in the "R" forum.

has anyone ever put a 250r engine in a 450 frame, and made a hybrid like that?

i think the 88 was the best year from what i heard
i think its because the swingarm is 1inch shorter and the a arms 1inch foward than the previous years. i dont know if this info is corect but its what i have heard

88-89 definatly. The rod was longer. You put an 86 piston in which was taller. And you run a spacer plate under the cylinder.

The 86 frame is considered the strongest of all 4 yrs by most.I still prefer the 88-89 just for aftermarket bolt on parts.Heres a few of the diffs between the years.
86-87 had same swingarm and a arm geometery 88-89 are the same-1" shorter swinger + 1' forward a arms
86 is the only year the TRX had a short rod,87-88 were long rod.All years had the same bore and stroke, the short rod had the wrist pin lowered 5mm in the piston.
86-87 have the same footpeg mounts/ 88-89 are the same
Slight variations in tranny gearing from 86 to 87 88-89 are the same with lower 5th and 6th gear from the other 2 years.
86-87 use a removeable rear motor mount with swinger that is "open" to go around it,88-89 have frame tabs for rear mount and the swinger is solid across the front.
89 had the clutch update, works on any year motor
86-87 had 4bolt front rotor,88-89 3 bolt
As a whole,1 year isnt really any better than the other.Any year can be made to perform like another by swapping stock/aftermarket parts

BTW,Service Honda a 250R built from a 400EX and a CR motor. Not a real R,but the reviews Ive seen gave it decent marks.

There are so many different routes you can go when you do a custom R. Ive built 1 from frame up and im sure youll enjoy deciding what parts you want. Most people like a 88 - 89 frame and engine. The 87 and up engine has the long rod which is a better setup. Also you can use an 86 piston and spacer plate with the long rod setup to make a optimal engine setup. Aftermarket frames are more expensive but allow you to have whatever kind of setup you want. Just search or ask if you have any questions on anything.

^^^^^^^^^^ I would def do something like that, but right now I am just trying to to pay off a few things so I can leave my job.. After I have paid off my bills and start a new job I will start buying things..I am just trying to figure out whats compatible so when I start I know what to buy.. How much do 250R engines normally sell for anyways??

You'd be money ahead if you would just buy a 250R and restore it or trick it out or whatever. Parting one together is fun, but will end up costing you more money, and a lot of stress trying to win stuff on ebay. I can't believe what some of these guys pay for parts on ebay..........it's rediculous.

I was thinking that, but I built a complete 300ex from the ground up and it cost alot less than buying one outright.. I dont know if 250R parts are more expensive or not though..

Start with my 2001 Lonestar Baja frame, 88-89 geometry.....all stock 88-89 parts bolt right up......then bulid a long rod motor and it will rip

I am really starting to think I want a 250R.. the hybrid I have is on its way out and I need something else.. My questions are: should I buy a complete bike (something stock is what I want) what do you think the prices are for a stock maybe fixer 250R? also if I was to build one How much do stock motors normally sell for?? I will probably try and buy a junker one to fix up for a good pirce, but might build one.. any ideas on these prices??

It would probably be cheaper to buy a full race R and just rebuild it, They go for extremely cheap compared to what they're worth.
