hey there, got an 05 400ex.. it's the wifes.. it has a k&n, no lid, dyno-jet kit, full hmf sport system, 20x11x9 itp sandstars. women are very competitive:devil: and her bike is no match for my ltz400:( what mods from here would be best to get it closer to my ltz and not ruin reliability. i was thinking an 11.1 piston and a stage one hot cam:confused:

A piston and cam would be would probably be the next step, if you don't want to into boring it out. If you did want the bore it out, a 406 would not much reliability at all.

I would go with the stage 2. I don't think you will see that much of a gain with stage 1. And if you don't have the rev box I would get that also. I hit the rev limiter really quick as it is. I keep up with the stock Honda 450s.

You might be able to get a 416 piston because it doesnt require any boring. or just get a 440 kit and have a new sleeve put in. Another option would be to get a 416 kit then have the crank stroked to make it a 440 (thus a 440 stroker kit)

Happy Riding!

When I had a 400 ex thus is what I did for riding Glamis

426 ross piston
hotcams stage 2
oversized cylinder studs
porting

The downside is needing race gas, overheating (but I a big guy)

The bike was much stronger than a stock bore, but not nearly as fast as the 450's

sell it and buy a 450;)
oh one more thing, Get better paddles, the sand stars suck on any quad, but they are way to much paddle for a 400ex. 6 paddle haulers would be great, gliders maybe.

Sand loves high revs. If I was to build a dune machine out of a 400EX, I'd keep the bore small (416 max) because the bigger bores just don't seem to rev out as well. I'd also run a stage 2 cam for power in the upper RPMs, a high-rev CDI.

If you wanted to go all-out, I'd also reccomend a good port job (a TRUE port job, not just cleaning up casting flaws) and oversized intake valves.

This combination would run circles around a LTZ400. The porting and valve mods would add significantly to the higher revs, and would probably give a 450 a run for it's money.

Hey, no insult intended;) I had that 400ex setup and it does not compare to my 450 or my predator.

I hate to start this arguement, but here it goes. If me,a piped predator, and stock trx450 drag, I win every time. I have dragged alot. I'm not saying I'm fast or anything special, that is just whats happened every time with me. I've raced piped 450's and have got smoked. I have also raced piped 450's and have won, but there must of been something wrong there, because when a piped 450 pulls up, I know I'm losing.

Skill plays a big part, My point being, a built ,and I mean built 400-440ex will give you about 40 hp. I remember when 40hp was the number everyone tried to hit. My pred I would guess with all the goodies around 42-44hp the new 450's upper 40"s. With this in mind and your drag racing skills. Think how fas you would be on a 450? I'm not really into drag racing, I'm into duning fast, even so I have raced a lot of 400-440 ex's Didn't lose on my pred. So I gues it depends on the rider.

We must be talking apples and oranges. I'm thinking stock 450. Ain't no way you're going to see high 40s from a stock machine, especially with the stock pipe. Them things are pretty choked up, you're going to be seeing mid-high 30s, nowhere near upper 40s.

Granted it's kinda stupid to compare stock vs modded. But if you want to compare modded vs modded, it's a no-brainer...

I see, I was thinking if the 450's had the regular mods everyone does, pipe, filter, jetting, ect...

One of the issues you have to look at alos is weight. I had a modded predator before my Raptor. It was making about the same HP as a modded 450. But it also weighed a good 60-70 pounds more. Then look at your full gear riding weight.
