View Full Version : 300ex head noises?

My brother brought his 300ex over to rethread a few holes on the cylinder. But the day he brought it over we started it up and notice a really loud clattering inside the head/cylinder area. The clattering went away at 1/2+ throttle in neutral. I tore it down suspecting that maybe it jumped out of time and the valves were hitting the piston but that wasn't the case. So does anyone else have any ideas? Visually, everything looks great and it was just rebuilt 8 months ago.

are the valves adjusted right? those will make a ticky clatter if they're out of adjustment. it could be piston smack or nothin..but if it hasn't had much use i can't see it being that...

I'm going with him. Pull the top cover off and see how much the cam chain can go over the sprocket. It should barely go over the teeth.

If thats the case im gonna be pissed. The cam chain is 30 minutes old. I replaced it last month. I'll check it out tho.

It's probably not the chain, probably your guides/tensioner if it it were coming from there.
