How much slack should I have in my chain?

I run about 3/4" to an 1".

Depends on the machine. From your name I'm assuming that you ride a 400ex. It should take about 20lbs to deflect the chain 1 in.

Go to gtthunder.com,they give another way to adjust the chain or adjustment to set the slack to. I use there method on my 450r and have had no problems.

Thats why I said depends on the machine, that way will not work for the 400, the 450R unlike most machines loosens as it travels, while most other quads tighten as they travel.

When I goto local riding areas I notice alot of people overtighten there chain. I mean there is no play,stiff as can be. I tell them of course they need to have alil slack. I always adjust mine then have somebody or myself sit on the quad and check it. I would I use about 1in of slack or so.

All I needed to know how much slack I needed, mine has about an inch, give or take, when someone is sitting on it.

Service Honda Says!! .... 1 1/4 - 1 5/8 inches of slack without any one sitting on it.

Almost all quads take somewere from 1 inch - 1.75 Inch. No need top be technicle about it.
