Technically there is no "stage 3" Hotcam. I'm guessing you're refering to the old version of the stage 2 HC. Some retailers still had stock on the old stage 2 when hotcams switched to the new version. Those retailers had to distiguish them somehow so they just made-up a stage 3 designation for the old version of the stage 2. Or, you might be talking about the HC Stroker cam which some people also (erroniously) call "stage 3".

Either way HERE (http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=237131) is how these cams compare to one another as far as specifications. The last item under "notes" is what HCs says about the difference between the old and new Stg 2 versions.

Don't buy it without finding out exactly what it is. You don't want to wind up with the wrong cam for your engine. The stroker cam in an otherwise stock engine isn't likely to turn out well....

i have a feeling he is referring to the stage 3 for the 450r. hotcams have a new cam coming out for the 450. i have not heard of any ride reports but a lot of dealers have them coming pretty quick. it is a pretty aggressive cam according to the specs. it isn't recommended for a stock bore bike though....time will tell.

Good call. I was assuming 400EX and now I notice his screename suggests he's got a 450r. Whoops.

yeah, i guess it would help if i told u that i had a 450r! i wonder what type of mods would it work best with? all i have done now is high compression piston with hrc cam and full exhaust and filter.. would that be enough or would i have to get more done

Either way there was a stage 3 hotcam for the 400ex's. They had a stage 1 and stage 2, but then they came out with a new cam in between those two so the old stage 2 went to the new stage 3, and the new cam became the new stage 2. So technically there are stage 1's, stage 2's(new stage 2), and stage 3's(old stage 2)

In a sense, but I think it's more accurate to call it what it is (the old stage 2)--not make up a new name for it. I've talked to Hotcams about the old stage two and they called it the old stage 2, not a stage 3. They no longer make the old stage 2. The only references to stage 3 that I've ever seen are from retailers' catalogs. Some list the old stage 2 (identifed by it's HC part number 1008-2) as a stage 2 and some call the same number a stage 3. And yet others call the stroker cam a stage 3. It's just confusing unless you call them what they actually are...stg 1, stg 2, old stg 2, and stroker.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it! lol

Do you know where I could get a Hotcams brochure? I've never seen one beyond what's on their website.
