whenever i hit up my 400ex hard it burns alot of oil. i just changed the oil in my quad and it sat with no oil in it for a few days becuase i broke a bolt that goes over the oil filter cover. then i got my bolt in today put it on and i start up my quad after putting in oil and it burns oil when i hit it up and sometimes when it is idleing. so i am thinkin it might be the rings? wut do u guys think?

I was burning oil and it was my rings, so its a real big chance that thats what is happening.

Either way it may be time for a rebuild:ermm:

might be rings, might need a valve adjustment or a valve rebuild, might neeed a whole top end job

Unfortunately:ermm: I never really took the proper maintenance and stuff, I'd just hop on it without checking the oil and cleaning the filter... Learned my lesson though, and I will cherish it this time around....

Also I think it may of helped that I was running my exhaust wide open:ermm:

2004 burning oil - not good.

Anyway... it could be 1 or more of the following:

worn bore
worn taper
out of round
worn rings
worn piston
scores in bore - poor lubrication/debris

how bad is it smoking?

only whern u hit it up sometimes you get a little puff of smoke.

it's weird how a motor will start to burn oil right after a fresh oil change, even with identical oil and the correct amount.

I agree with that statement ^^^. It is weird. Something else it might be (since you said it puffs sometimes when you let off the throttle) it could be your valve seals.

From my experience, when your quad puffs smoke at an idle its usullys your valve seals. If you're smoking in the upper RPMs its usually your rings.

Thats my two cents. Hope it helps in you diagnosis.
