I have a question about which one to buy. My son just started racing in the sport 350cc or under or blaster class. He now rides a 250 ex and it is not near as fast as the blasters that he is racing against. We sopped and test rode a blaster that someone had for sale and it seemed to have no power at all until you really got it going and I am really revving it like you need to on a 2 stroke. It seemed like to me his 250 ex would be faster until about 4th gear. But there could have been something wrong with the blaster I was riding. So how about a 300 ex would it be a better choice? He gets beat on the straight aways and the corners. He is 10 years old and is about 5' 1" and 105 pounds. He can ride the 250 to its limits and is ready for a bigger bike anyway. I want something also that he can ride on trails. Top speed really isn't the factor but being faster and handleing the jumps on the track is what we are after. He loves doing this and I just want to get him something to be competetive. I plan on modding whichever one I buy. Thank you.

You got to keep the RPMs reved out to get the most power out of the engine. I would go with the 300ex. Its reliable and he dosen't have to learn how ride with the engine since its a four stroke. IMO.

I disagree with the 300ex as a choice if he will be racing. The blaster can be made to go very fast with a few cheap mods like a pipe and jetting. They can be built to keep up with the big guys if you wanted depending on how much your willing to spend on it.(240 kit) Many after market companies make a lot of go fast parts for them. I’m not against the 300ex, they are a superb trail machine and are quick also but there is something about the two stroke when you get them up on the pipe if they are jetted right they fly and are very competitive. In case any one wants to know I have one of each 300ex & 200 blaster with about the same amount of mods and the blaster will beat the 300ex all day long. About the only thing that I dislike about the blaster is the brakes. If you do decide to get one get a newer one with hydraulic disk brakes or convert them over to hydraulic. JMO

the only thing thats better than a blaster is the 300ex you just push the button and go with the blaster you got to kick it to start it

Go for the 300ex. To start, I have a blaster right now fully built to race. In all youth production classes, 200/300, and blaster classes the 300ex's are out front. Look at the national riders the top 7 right now are on 300ex's. A 300ex has more potentional IMO. You can build up a 300ex motor and it'll be more reliable and put out more HP. Also, 4 strokes normally have a smoother powerband. You can get a relocator for the suspension and run a long travel 400ex front end also. A 300ex will be much more money to be built than a blaster though. If your still interested in a blaster I have one for sale for $3100. Also, Check out www.projectblaster.com.

Having owned both(still got the 300ex) i would say the 300.Even with just a pipe and a k and n air filter they go pretty good.Adjust the valves every now and then but they dont require much hands on.A blaster will need piston and rings more often.I have had several 300ex's over the years and i just love them things.Sure there are faster and better handling quads out but they are just so dang fun to ride imo.:D

go with the 300ex i have one, and i can keep up with the 400's and even the 450's, i dont beat them, but i am very close...i put a piston, cam, curtis sparks pipe, and a minor port job and mine rips pretty hard.

Thanks guys for all the info. I did find a 2005 Blaster in excellent condition for 1700.00, what do you think? I have looked at a few 300 ex's and blasters local but the 300's were pretty beat up for the price.

Tuff call. We chose the 300 over the blaster

I know a deal on the blaster seems good, but used blasteres usually have seen thier share of abuse. Not that 300's havent:p

well in the long run the 300ex would b a better bike to have blaster require lots of work to maintain they r a real fun bike but a 2 stroke just wont stay together
