I've been running 10w-40 on both sides for quite some time. So I think its time for a change.

What do you guys reccomend running in the motor side and tranny side?

I was thinking Mobil 1, 10w-30 Fully Synthetic in the motor side and just regular 10w-40 in the tranny side.

Does anyone reccomend anything?

Transmission: Valvoline 10w30 was reccomended to me by a man who really knows clutch componets. change it every ride.

Engine side: Use a high Quality non synthetic oil for longer valve spring life and change it every ride. Sounds like too often? It's less than a quart! If you are tight then just change the oil filter every other.

Bottom line: Oils cheap, engines aren't, buy good name brand oil and change it often.

wow, every ride? sounds a little extreme to me, maybe on your 522cc bike, but not on mine :eek2:

i ride almost every day, that would be an insane amount of money, thats just my opinion

I run Mobil 1 10-30 fully synthetic in my motor side and change it after every race or every 2 rides and my oil filter every other oil change. I run Honda 10-40 on the tranny side and change it when I change my oil filter.

one quart of oil is plenty for 450CC's! I dont know why people flip out and change there oil every ride! I could see if its one quart for the engine and the tranny but its not.

look at it this way!!!

450 CC = 27.460 CI
350 CI = 5735.472 CC

a SBC take between 4-8 quarts of oil most take 5. high end race cars take 6-8.
so i will go with 8 quarts one per cylinder.

5735.724 / 8 = 716.934 CC per quart on a High end 500+ hp motor. Witch the 450r is!

now lets take the norm 5 Quarts!!
5/8 = .625 quart per 716.934 CC

How does non-synthetic oil promote long valve spring life? How does oiling have anything to do with valve spring life? Valve springs have no bearing surfaces so I'm missing how oiling affects them (other than perhaps keeping them cooler by splashing oil drawing heat out of the spring and transfering it into the oil--but that's going to happen no matter what oil is used).

I don't get it.

That analysis doesn't take into account RPM which I believe has a lot to do with how quickly an oil's viscosity breaks down do to shearing. Quad engines are also subjected to dirty and extreme operating conditions. If you ran a 500hp V8 in dirty offroad environments and worked it just as hard as the typical 450 works, then the V8 is going to want pretty frequent oil changes too.

Perhaps the best way to determine what oil change interval is required for any given engine in any given operating environment is to have a sample of used oil tested by a laboratory. There are several companies that sell "kits" with which you can collect and send in test samples for analysis. That will tell you exactly how worn out and dirty an oil is. By doing trend analysis (sample testing done over time) you can also spot developing problems before they become engine failures.

I think a typical oil analysis costs about $25.
