is there a specific year 450r carb i shoule be using on my 400ex or are they all the same? thanks guys

04/05 are the same. It's a 42mm piston valve Keihin carb similar in basic design to the stock EX carb. This is the one that is popularly used as a performance upgrade on EXs. Cost vs. benefit has a lot to do with this. Reports are that they help performance noticably but they don't cost much...

The 06 450r carb uses a 40mm Keihin FCR carb. This is a superior carb. Keihin FCRs are generally regarded as the very best performing carbs available--it's no accident ALL the new 4 stroke MX bikes have FCRs. A FCR from an 06 450r is going to cost a lot more and won't be as easy to mount up to the EX.

just curious would a 42mm carb give you more air flow than a 40mm? giving you better power? just curious

You can't make direct performance comparisons based on those dimensions alone. The carbs are just too different in how they're designed...
