Hey guys, I'm planing on heading to tennessee at the end of august. I will be traveling about 560 miles (9 hours). I havent done the trip with this truck, and I'm wondering how much money I will need to save up for gas?? :eek2: I figured about $300 For there and back. Plus money for driving while im there = +100.

1120miles round trip
$65 for a tank of gas
250 miles to the tank (I hope)

so far, we've been getting around 14-15 mpg :eek2:

How many miles to a full tank, do you know?>

im going to assum that 5.4 is in the new ford f series, which will mean youll need money for it to tow you off the high way when it breaks down and money to fix it. :D

Good one jackass

I usually get about 250 miles on about 17 gallons of gas. Almost 15 miles per gallon. If you drive like a grandma you may do a little better. Id figure atleast 300 to 350 bucks round trip.

yeat annother reason i love my chevy's. 200mile trip loaded with 3 quads ( one in the box 2 on the trailer) going 75 on cruse getting 18mpg, oh yeha its a 6.0 Liter vortech:devil:

07-27-2006, 04:11 PM
I would save 500 bucks for gas just to be sure you have enough.
It cost us $700 to go from Baton Rouge, Louisiana to Knoxville, Tn in our F350 while pulling a 35 foot travel trailer

Right after I got my truck, I took a trip to WV (good sized hills on the way)... it was about a 6 hour highway drive. I got 17mpg pulling a trailer with (3) 400ex's.... not bad for a GM V8 (5.3L).

How slow are you going?
Make sure and leave the tailgate down, and yeah, new Fords are HORRIBLE on gas, almost like a dodge.

My truck (after tune though) 04 GMC Sierra 5.3L 16.5 mpg average
Dad's truck, 05 f-150 5.4L 14.4mpg average

Leave the tailgate up. Trucks are designed to be more aerodynamic with the tailgate up. I saw them prove this on Mythbusters.

yeah dont you watch myth busters, they proved that the tailgate being down actually hurts gas milage

trick250r
07-27-2006, 06:07 PM
around 364 mi. give or take a few. ours is still new and tight so if you've got some more miles on yours, you'll probably get a little better milage.

then tell me this my friends dad with his 03 F150 5.4 auto got 13mpg on the same tip with only one quad in the box. in the hills he couldn't keep up to us. and he only had 400lbs in the box:rolleyes: and tell me this our 03 silverado wiht 182,xxxkm's hasn't had one problem ( not one code came up on the diagnostic check) and this ford has 83,xxx km's and all the balljoints and bushings needed to be replaced because the front tires were balled on the inside. and soem other things like the frotn driveshaft was out of ballence so they had to replace that and all in all he walked out with a $1900 bill. the thing never sees any dirt roads like 99.9% highway driving thats all he does with it and the front end is woren out? shouldn't they last longer than that?

Adam, i went up north towing a trailer with my 5.4 (1 dirt bike 1 quad) and we made a 180 mile drive on a half tank (22 gal tank total). I thought it would take a tank to get up there. I wouldnt recomend bringing cash though, get some travelers' checks or a debt card.

I have a I have a F-150 with a 5.4 and get 360 to 370 on a tank

I do mostly local driving and on a full tank I get anywhere from 250 - 270 miles of driving. If I travel on the highways I know I can get well over 300 not sure if I'd get 360 but I haven't had to drive that far in awhile.

Also if you want to bash each other about owning chevys dodges fords whatever... take it to another site.. who care what you drive.. Its all about what you like.

I own a ford but I drove a 05 f150 and hated it. :macho :macho :macho :macho

Seems like a lot for gas. I just went to Sand lake, a 6 hour drive for me, mostly 55-65 driving. I used 22 gallons going 375 miles with my quad in the back, and about 100 lbs of firewood. That is 17 MPG on a 5.7 liter engine. Keep the cruise on, and stay around 55-60. Total mileage for the trip was 575 miles round trip. I filled up with 75 dollars, went 375 miles, filled up again for 68 and went 200 miles to home. Had a little less than half a tank. This was also traveling through mountainous terrain. YUou should be getting at the very least 15 mpg with a quad.

Believe it or not, each engine can very in mileage, even if they're the same motors.

That's no news, but 14.5mpg vs. 18mpg is more than a normal difference between the same motors

I have basically the same truck as you, an F150 7700 and i have 33" BFG Mud terrains on and my speedo is still set for stock tires... My normal city/country driving with a lead foot is about 260 on the odometer but its off obviously. My only highway trip i was loaded with coolers and everything, the box was packed full halfway up the cap, and i had 3 passengers so easily an extra 1000lbs over normal. I set the cruise at 67, friends in a car behind me had theirs set at 77 or so, but on that tank my odometer read 330 or soand i put 20 gallons in. I just figured it out and that was about 370-380 miles if my odometer would be right and that put me over 18mpg...

My 5.3L gets a good 19-20mpg on the highway, and a 6.0L is basically just a 5.3L bored over as far as I know. So it's very real, Vortecs get awesome mileage. Something to think about though is that elevation would play a bit of a role too I would think.

My truck (2000 F150 4x4 5.4L) averages 11.5mpg. IT SUCKS. On the highway I get about 15-16, 250-300 miles per tank. It has no power compared to my dad's 5.3L Chevy Z71 Crew. And we get 18-19mpg on the highway with the chevy! I'm savin my money up for next summer when I get to trade my ford off for a chevy.

Yea... You do know Canada does not use Miles for thier measurement... and dont you guys use Liters instead of Gallons?

...this is why that guy made his statement that it must be "Canadian". No one is saying Canadian or American cars are more efficent than each other (the cars are basically identical in most cases).

We use metric, but the MPG is still used when measuring the fuel efficiency of a vehicle, or, they're measured in L/100KM.

I'm not sure about todays 5.3 and 6.0L, but I do know a few years ago the 6.0L used a different cam and head than the 5.3. More for power than gas mileage.

There's a bunch of different 6.0's out there, most of the motors have slightly different cam's but most use the same heads as the 5.3's I believe

Yea, they could be... I'm basing this on other truck forums I've read. They probably do use the same heads.

stalefish_132
07-30-2006, 07:43 PM
the 6.0L (364ci) is a 5.3 (325ci) that has been bored out. 4.00 X 3.62 is the bore/stroke on the 6.0L's and 3.78 X 3.62 for the 5.3L's. there are differances liek the cam is differant between the two but the heads are the same form the 4.8L to the 6.0L.
either way you cant go wrong with a vortech :D

and yes i did the math it worked out to be 18.78mpg so 19 isn't out of the question:rolleyes:

A truck isn't a real truck unless it's domestic, I don't think a further explaination is neccessary.

Also I want to chip in that every company has setups as far and engines, trannies, and final drives that can accomplish certain things better than other combinations and such, its all about the setup...
