If I'm strictly riding in mx or dirt, do I need to use the airbox at all? http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h129/buster024/P7250013.jpg
I would...
I'm sure over 90% of this site will agree with me

I would to.... But If I were you and you wanted more air flow, I'd just put back the airbox on and leave the lid off and just buy an outwears cover for it... I think that would be your best bet because it should protect more and still allow you to get more air flow.

it si much safer to run with the box and do what they said above and just remove the lid for more air flow

I have the outerwear cover, it was just drying off while I took this picture, and I run without the lid. Why would it be safer? Safer because I couldn't crush it, if I bottomed out, or safer like I won't have junk getting in my motor via my filter?

I don't have the core in, but unfortunately we broke our video camera, so I can't record anything. It sounds like a f'n harley with the core out! I really like the sound! Sorry man!!

Its no big deal, I just wanted to compare the sound of a Yoshimura on 400ex with a quiet core, and then without.
Thanks anyway.

you would have to make a bracket to hole the filter in place if you wanted to run without a lid. the boot would pop off the card if you didnt. you wouldnt benefit much from running no box compared to no lid. i just dont thin kit is worth the risk of haveing the boot come off the carb or if you go into anytype of water

the K@N powerlid isnt a bad option either. a little pricey, but gets the job done.

If you're not worried about deep water, the only other thing to worry about is the filter getting damaged by a lot of other things like; rocks, sticks, other quads, that kind of thing. I'd modify the air box, or make a "containter" out of steel mesh or something so that things can't get to the air filter as easily.

It seems that it you run MX with your intake like that It would wiggle free after hitting the whoops a couple times and some rough landings. Personally I wouldn't do it if it falls off and you suck in some dirt your piston/rings/cylinder sleeve could be destroyed
i would def run an airbox if u ever get out into muddy conditons on a mx track u will get no air flow. Atleast get a pre charger if ur not running a airbox!
