Probably not enough of a difference between them to make it worth considering. The EX is simplier to adjust though, with it's screw-tappet adjusters. The Z has shim under bucket valve adjustment which means shims are needed to make adjustments and the cams have to come out to get to them. They're both dead reliable engines (in mostly stock form anyway)...

If simple valve train maintenance is a priority than the EX is hard to beat. But IMO there are other, much greater differences in the machines that overshadow their differences in valve train maintenance....

just $0.02

Liquid cooling is the big one. They're both good quads but the Z's liquid cooling gives its engine the edge in my book. Mod for mod the Z is likely to always be a half-step ahead of the EX...

Then again, liquid cooling might be a disadvantage for some--just depends on how you're gonna use it I guess.

The overall build quality of the EX is hard to discount though. The Z's engine has been running around in the DRZ dirt bikes for quite a few years now and they enjoy a fine reputaion for reliabilty. But my *guess* is that if you take the whole quad into acount, 20 years from now the average EX is gonna hold up a little better than a Z. I only say that based on my past experiences with various Suzukis and Hondas.

i read from some other forum that the z400 cam chain stretches alot, is this true? Do's the 400ex have a cam chain?
what do's the cam chain do?

I really just love the simplicity of the 400ex engine itself. They are so simple, stevie wonder could probably work on one if he wanted.

Motofuccktard,
The comic dog that he posted last...He tells a bunch of star wars nerds that they are going to die a virgin...its helarious.
I think I hit Motofuccktard's weak spot, and he speaks of masturbation like hes quit fluent with it!! :p
One day you will get some *** moto, until then go get your quad dirty!!
Have a nice day!! :ermm:

Ok... This thread has gone too far... Anyways, I would believe that the 400ex would need less maintenance. One cam, and its easier to adjust. The z400's have had a problem with the cam chain stretching, and it coming loose, which is what turned me away.

lol nice quad anyways but the z400 is liquid cooled so thats good think but they are faster that the 400ex but if you put mods a 400ex like k&N,pipe and jetted if woul dkeep up to a z400ex but I am a honda rider so i would get a honda

The 400ex is easier to adjust, the intervals are closer together though, meaning the Z requires less valve adjustments. Either machine is a good choice though. 400EX is a perfect engine to learn how to wrench on, very simple four-stroke.
