i want something that i can throw around bit, thats light, quick, has power and reliable but still has good trainablity...Nooo chain drives(4inches of gc doesnt cut it)... i heard 2wds are good if you know how to use them. i been in 2wd with my foreman on a plowed snow road and cant go anywhere but my foreman weighs over 250 pounds more than this thing so weight might be to my advantage with a 250EX. i like it being fully manual too and is probaly more fun to shift then my foreman.. (stupid auto clutch) so what do you guys think. i really like the 250 but me being 16 and 5'8" 130lbs it maybe to small??? i need some input.
thanks BW

p.s if this machine wont fit the bill which machine would you guys suggest?

dont get one. youll get sick of the power very fast. 250exs are by no means fast, powerful, and quick, they just have alot of ground clearance. a foreman is faster and more powerful than a 250. and the foreman with the extra weight should do great in snow because of increased traction, it probablly just has bad tires. if you want somthing with what you described, you need atleast a 400 sport quad. my advice is to go for a z400, 400ex, raptor, or predator.

Did you not just read what he said ? What part of "no chain drives" do you not understand? What are you doing in the <350cc forum anyhow?

i've almost exclusively ran my 250ex on tight trails and sand/gravel pits...if i wasn't broke i wouldn't be selling it.

Power aside, out of the group of stock 400exs that usually ride with me, all my buddies still like to ride my 250 just because it is so easy to wheelie and very manueverable through the woods. oh, and not for nothing, but i can hang with a stock 400ex until 4th gear.

What quad would you recomend for trail and snow riding?

yes i did read what he said as a matter of fact. looks like hes the same age as me, 16. he will have ZERO fun on a 250ex. i got mine when i was 13 and sold it a littler over a year later to get somthing bigger. you are so limited with them. almost no after market parts. cant regear unless you want to mess with tires. and the power isnt great. ya it might be a good wheelie bike but what the hell does that matter? its so small you cant even rail a flat turn without almost tipping.

thats great your buddies like to ride it, its just a play bike to them compared to a 400ex i bet. thats great you can hang with one until 4th gear, which means the 400 still has all of 4th gear and 5th gear to keep going. the 250ex is not ment to be ridden hard, its an entry level quad which means its ment for small people about 12.

oh and for the record, i can browse and post in ANY section i want too. who made you king **** and said i cant post in here? i contribute to more than just open forum...

MY GF got a 250ex for her first quad. She sold it in a year and bought a KFX 400. It was a good begginer quad and it was very fun. You could do anything with it. But It was slow. Maybe 45MPH. But the 250 was very reliable, she rode the crap out of it. It had to have its first oil change in 1 Week lol. I would go with like a 400ex or a warrior. They are reliable, I know they have a chain but thats not hard to up keep. Just get a Cylmer manual and you will be alright, That is how I learned.

Jesus what the **** is your problem?

It doesnt matter what forum were in, its not like 350cc and under is Private for people with only 350cc and under.

but i can hang with a stock 400ex until 4th gear.

I dont know what kind of mods you have, but I was riding with someone with a 250ex, fmf mega max 2, and K&N filter

I never got out of 3rd. I was revving high though.

i dont care for the maintence for a chain its the gc on all of them.. ITS LIKE 4 INCHES lol!! i dont need to nessesairly go fast either. ill probally just go with a kodiak 450 or something that can go through some snow and mud and reach 50mph. the only problem with the kodiak is it going to take me longer to pay back dad and the rear brakes squeel...but i never really use the brakes on quads anyways so i should be good with it!

thanks

the reasons 250s have good clearance is because of the 22 inch tires, get a 400, then just put 22's on it

250ex is a pretty fair quad to me, its easy to do wheelies and its got a pretty good amount of power. It gets its top speed fast, and its really good for trails and it blasts through deep mud. I just bought a brand new 2006, and i love it. i was origanly gonna buy a 400 ex, but i got a good deal on this one so i got it, if you get one you wont be dissipointed. Personally, i think theres a big difference in the 2000-2005 and the 2006-2007 models, the 06 and 07 to me are a bit faster and accelorate a bit better than the 05, and im talking stock. What i suggest is to go to a honda dealership and ask to test a 250ex, thats honda's policy to let anyone interested test drive it. it will be a 06-07 but its not much difference, only one way to know if you want it and thats to try it yourself.

i just found out that my aunts quad is a 00' 250 rancher ES i was just talking to her and my uncle and they say is goes any where you point it. she weighs way more then me and she has a blast.......Snow is different around here, the sun heats it up and then when the night comes around it freezes over and makes layers of ice, some rare spots you sink in but again thats with my 570 pound machine on top on it, not a 350lbs machine.... i think id have a blast... i just makes sence...speed dosnt matter to me...just i can get it to go anywhere. it should still accelerate faster and have a higher(or same) top speed of my foreman. i wont be going through deeep mud.. maybe 5"-6" max. and ill stick to the looooong plowed road untill i make some trails on my foreman 450 then repeat on the 250EX(for snow).

thanks

TT
P.s i hope you guys(girls) are'nt refering to the older 250's?!
what ever quad i get, will be brand new, or a slightly used one, either way it'll be a 06-07.

"but if you plan on keeping this quad for a long time, think long and hard about this decision, becouse if you do wind up growing out of it, your stuck with it."

good point. i think ill stick to a wolv 450 then cause it'll last me a looong time, i think.

Well, I'm 30 5'10'' 180lbs. and just bought a 250ex. It is my first quad, but I have ridden others. The fastest being a piped 400ex. For me the big thing was a good trail bike. And it is great. I'll go out for hours and never reach 5th gear, So who cares about top speed. The 250 acclererates well and handles great. I can hang with all the big utilities and still whip it around like a sport bike.
Will this be the quad I ride for the rest of my life, probably not. But I am certainly very happy for now and I could always give it to my wife.

Hope this helps.

I had a 91 250x, 12:1,full exhaust,k&n,cam, jetted, and it would get ahead of most 300ex's but any 400 would smoke it, so when people say they have a 250ex (my wife rides an 05 250ex) that will keep up with a 400 ? I have to call b.s.
even modded 250ex vs stock worn-out 400 its not even close.
the 250ex is what it is. a great starter quad with super reliability, average power, average handleing, and it will hold its resale value well (as most honda's). you can have years of fun on them but if your looking to be competitive vs anything bigger then forget it.
thats why I moved to a 250r and now to the 450r. but I still take the 250ex into the woods and still have fun on it.

OK. I don't post that much but I can't keep silent any longer. I am going to lash out on all you jackass punks who keep knockin 250Ex's. Every time someone asks a perfectly good question about a 250Ex someone has to jump in and put the quad down and call it crap. "get a 400" I here too much I want to puke. This site is not only for 400 and above sport quads. Get off you F***ing egos. That being said; I bought a 2004 250Ex for my first quad. I absilutlt loved it. I had ridden Raptors,a DVX 400 ,and a 400Ex. They are all great. I love the speed. I have a R1 for a bike so speed is cool to. A 250Ex also has its place for people who don't need speed. I ride the crap out of my quad and never get above 40mph because of the terrain I ride. I love throwing it around because it is light. I can go through anything a 4x4 can go through because I ride on top of the mud and don't sink into it. A 250Ex in basically a utility quad with a sport body. You are not going to jump very high but that is fine if you don't ride this way. I go through snow and even plow with mine. It is auto clutch with shaft drive so it actually works surprisingly well. I wanted a quad I could do anything with for not alot of monet that was reliable and that was fun. I sold it last year and regretted it. So I bought a 2005 a month ago and realized how much I missed it. Please stop knocking us 250 ridders. Go spend 7 grand and have fun . I spent 3 grand and now can buy other toys and still have fun on my quad.

Oh by the way I am 30 years old and will never grow out of a 250Ex. I am 6 feet 175 pounds. Think of it this way. Back in the day a 250 quad was a large quad . Remeber 3 wheelers that were 90cc and 200cc. When they started making 250's people were like holy sh**. Same thing with cycles. A 350 was small,550 was medium, and a 750 was a large bike. Now a 1000 is small and a 2300cc Triumph is big. Just something to think about. I bet when people in the 80's wrer ridding there 200cc Foremans they wrer not like"this sucks,I wish I had a 400". Hell no, it was fun and still is. This sociaty is getting nuts about bigger bikes and quads. Cars are getting smaller and cycles are getting bigger. It used to be you bought a cycle for the gas mileage. Now cycles have the same size motors as cars!

A 250ex is a great quad. Its reliable and indestuctible. I have a 400 and 450 but I still love to hop on the 250 and play ride. If you get one you wont be disappointed

09-28-2006, 08:08 PM
What is wrong with a 250ex? Not nearly as fast as a 400 or a 450? That'd be awesome advice...If he was going to race. He's going to snow/mud ride, and I hope to God he doesn't hit the mud or ride on snow going 65mph.

Yeah guys, the 250ex is a PLAY bike, you cant compart it to a 400 or raptor or some 800 max. Thats why in QUAD magazine they do 450 SHOOTOUTS AND 500 SHOOTOTS. YOU CANT COMPARE A PLAY QUAD TO A FULL BLOWN RACE QUAD!

Thanks.

Order a plow for a Honda Recon. It is exactly the same setup. I have a manual lift. I have a Moose plow for mine. It cost 350.00 for everything. Let me know if you need more info. I can take pics of it and show you if you like.

No problem. I will get some pics up as fast as I can. It might be a day or 2. The plow works awesome. If you have wet snow over 6 inches it struggles though. Otherwise it beats shoveling! 4X4's are overrated. people mount plows on garden tractors all the time. If a lawnmower can plow just think how much better a basic 2 wheel drive quad can do. It is not a 4X4 but still gets the job done. chains on the tires help but the most important thing is to keep all your weight over the rear tires and keep the momentum going.

As promissed, pics of a plow on my 250EX. The plow works awesome. There is a mounting plate you bolt to the frame with U bolts. Two quick release pins hold it to the mount. A strap is placed on the front bumper or frame to lift it. It goes on and off in 1 minute. No lie! As I said this is the plow thay sell for the Recon. The Recon has the exact same frame as the 250Ex so it works the same. I also use tire chains sometimes if it is icy. Most of the time I don't,you just have to keep the momentum going. Hey if a ridding lawn mower can do it,so can the torque of a 250EX!

I was looking at the z250 and it doesnt have its drive shaft enclosed, does the the trx250 have it enclosed?
This will sound wimpy, but i only reach speeds on adverage, maybe 30 KPH. Last weekend i found some open road and got to 43KPH and decided that was to much and let off. If the TRX 250 goes between 40 to 60KPH thats all i'd need. I have decided if i can't find a used 250 EX/Recon/Ozark, ill either go for a raptor 350 or a used 400ex. I just need a light little quad to bomb around on.

The 250EX has the shaft enclosed. You should go for the Honda. I like the shaft enclosed better. Also the top speed of the 250Ex is about 50 to 52mph. Hope this helps.

I like my 250EX just fine. It might not be fast as the status quads, but I haven't gotten bored with it. I can ride the hell out of it and riding where I ride (almost 100% trails) I hang with or ride faster than much quicker bikes, 400EXs, 450Rs, old 250Rs.

They can't do more than 50 on the trails anyway, and I'm able to wring out every bit of that trail as possible at high speed, which is of course really fun. Does it take tons of body language to stay on the trail? Yeah, but I'm shifting weight all over the place to make those corners. Good fun.

The main reason I got it was cost, and what I planned to do with it. I wanted to buy two quads instead of just being able to afford one 450R. 2nd, what I want to use them for makes a 450R unneccessary. All I do is trail ride and go sight seeing, not flat out racing up Oldsmobile at Glamis with all the extended swingarm Banshees.

dont buy it. just dont. sure its a fun little quad and its great on the trails but as soon as you get to be a better rider you will be left wanting more. i had mine for 2 years last august and it just isnt enough. it was fine until i relly got a chance to ride something better. on its own it is a decent quad but the minute you stack it up against something better its just **** the suspension sucks and there is no power. but if ur going to stick to the trails it really is a pretty good quad. i can drive off and leave the 450s at the badlands. it is fun but it just isnt enough
