in the sand, should a 450r go up a tooth in the front to a 14? or do u need the 13 in the sand

I would run a 13 front no matter what. I would run a 38 rear for duning. A 40 rear for the hill and a 39 for a combo of both.

What motor, if stock I would run the 13t front and just 38t rear.

I have a 13:1JE and stage 2 hotcam, and I run the 14, it seems like the 13 just holds back the cam at the dunes

i would try the 14 t to start out, if it bogs down just switch the sprockets, it doenst take that long

Get yourself a 13 but go out there with stock gearing. If you like it good, if you don't then put the 13 on. Don't worry about the rear until you figure out the front. It's all personal preference.

The 06 already has a 13 front. You will be fine with 13/38.

I've got an 06 and I am going to try a 12 tooth countershaft on my next visit to Sand Mountain Nevada. This is a huge dune and I think the stock 13 is still geared a little tall. We shall see...

Your better off going to a 39 or 40 rear. The 12 front will eat chain slides.

Yeah I was worried about that too, but according to a guy on this thread, 12 tooth Sprocket (http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=237148) wear is minimal. I will keep a close eye on it though. Changing out the countershaft is a breeze...

the 13 is to tall

I think it could stand to be geared a little lower, specially for straight hill climbing. Sand Mountain is long and steep and my paddles might be a tad taller than stock knobbies. So yeah 13 may be a little tall...

Keep your stock sprockets with your setup and just practice dragging more. A set of handlebars that are setup a little more forward may help also, this is assuming that your bars are in a similar position to stock. I don't have any trouble keeping my front end down and my mods are a little more extensive than yours. I run CR double high handlebars and they put me in a much more aggressive position than stock. I am 6'1" so the bars you need may vary a little. Getting back on a quad with stock position bars is a joke to me now, I feel like I have to sit down and back when riding aggresively (front end up). Hope this helps.
