I have been having to tighten the locknut on the axle because you start to hear a noise when you shake the back end from side to side like there is slack. It keeps coming back though. I tightened the living **** out of it with a pipe wrench. It is a 1987 250x.

It Could Need Some Rear Bearings.

If the whole axle is moving i dont think its ur locknut, u might wanna check the bearing carrier.

how about quit being so cheap and buy a good axle nut. but i have heard that electrical tape will work for stockers but i would still buy a new one.

you can try using two pipe wrenches on each piece of the locknut, turning against each other. That kept mine from loosening

You might wanna check out the bearings....they sound like they are worn out.
A buddy of mine's 300's bearing wore out and the whole back end had about 2" of sway in it. They replaced them and it solved the problem.
