got question, i cranked up my 450r for about 5 secs and i went to see if the exhaust bolt and the header was extremly hot, when i mean hot it burnt the sh*t out of my finger. i have a 50 piolt with a 170 main jet..im running 110 octane. so what do you think its to lean...

well it only takes 5 sec for the pipe to get hot i would get a new spark plug and do a chop. but if it is backfiering that tells you that it is lean.

Ya you should try adj. the mixture screw adj. 1/2 out and c if it helps rather than taking the carb apart. bye a new plug and do a chop off then check the pluge that will tell you all you need.

Well, my brother just bought a ltr450 and the first time he took it for a ride he rode for like 2hrs and the pipe was glowing on it so the 450s' can get pritty hot.

A plug "chop" refers to a technique for evaluating jetting by using plug color. The procedure is outlined in this thread:

I don't care for using plug readings for performance tuning (see my comments in that thread). It's not as straight forward as most people think.

Don't start changing your jetting because your header gets hot quickly. Exhaust gas is extremely hot--it will (and should) get your header hot enough to burn you within seconds....

i turned my air/fuel mixture screw a 1/4 turn out and it started to backfire...i turned the screw back in but i have not ridden it since to c if the backfiring stopped. so we will c tomorrow..
