When you ride your 400ex in trail's or sand pit's in 100+ dg weather, do you fill like it looses power or or do's it overheat. How do you no if it is over heating when you are riding?

heat robs power. the higher the heat, greater the power loss.

as far as overheating, look into either air shrouds, bigger oil coolers, make sure your jetting isnt lean, and make sure you change your oil.. and run a good oil, you could even go up to a heavier weight oil

95* weather this past weekend, I rode for 8 hours straight on saturday, and 6 hours straight on sunday. All I have for cooling is the air shrouds, and I didn't get a hint of overheating.

I honestly couldn't tell a difference in performance, but you can bet every penny you have that anything is going to run better in the colder, denser air.

Mine used to get really hot. Of course thats riding dunes hauling my fat arse around. You might want to fatten up your jetting a little, that will help. Use good synthectic (sp) oil that will help also. Other than that buy a water cooled quad;)

i dont notice a power loss at all but i can tell this, this past week it was 106 here and i rode my 400 for about 15 minutes and when i got done i tested the heat off the top of the cylinder and it read 465 degrees but i still didnt notice a loss of power so i would think u could run it to 500 without something seriously happening.

I can feel a huge power loss since the winter. But how do you know if its overheating?? I guess mine doesnt though cuz it still runs

I have a 416 kit and nothing to help cool it. I rode in 95 degree plus weather with no problems. I am running just a little rich

try running higher octane fuel on top of the obvious shrouds and oil cooler. the higher octane fuel will bring down your temp a couple degrees. i run nothing under 108. also you can drop your temp by wrapping your header in manifold heat wrap, just don't get the wrap wet or it won't function properly.

Whant is the difference between 100% Synthetic, and Synthetic Blend motor oils. And what 20w50 oil do you use? Is Maxum4 Synthetic Blend (20w50) a good oil to use? Is the Honda's Pro-Honda HP4 (20W50) a good oil? To everyone

i don't like honda oil and i don't run synthetic. i only run non detergent 10w40 and i switch it out every race

To answer the original post question, yes heat affects power. I live in Arizona so I know hot weather. When I'm riding in 110-115 degree weather my bike runs like poop. It feels like it runs rich and I have major lag when I get hard on the throttle. Oh well, it's not going to stop me from riding :)

Ive noticed it with both my 426 and 440 kits. MORE so with my 426 at the dunes. Sand is HP robbing as well.I can feel power loss but it has never effected the overall riding for the day. I just let her have a few cool downs when needed. I also run C-12

I REALLY noticed it when trying to climb a steep sand hill. If I do it a few times, its harder to get up the hill
