I need help with rear brakes

My old brake pads were completely gone, i mean down to bare metal, so I bought new ones. The problem is i can't get them to fit. The thing (sorry i don't know anything about brakes) that compresses is in too far, is there any way i can release this so the pads will fit.

Are you talking about the piston ?
Take a c-clamp to it, it will compress it back
level to the housing so you can install the new brakes.
