I had a magnaflow turbo muffler installed on my 98 4.0 Ranger. It was a single in/dual out muffler. I left the factory cat in place, when I went to fire it up for the first time, I swear it was almost as quiet as stock.:o I said screw that, had them cut the muffler out and install a y-pipe, now it's just factory cat with no mufflers. I think it sounds pretty damn good for a v-6, not too ricey and not too loud. When I'm cruisin down the highway I can't even hear it. But when your rompin on it downtown, it will definitely make a little noise. In my opinion, you should do like I did or just cut the factory cat out and then install an aftermarket exhaust system with good mufflers. Factory cat with magnaflow=BAD. Also, if you have the old system cut out, you should save it in case the person who buy's your truck next wants factory exhaust still.

borla or magnaflow. gibson flows like syrup and flowmasters are so overrated and sound like a flushing toilet.

I've got a Flowmaster 40 series on mine, 2.25 in and out, I ran a single 2.5 out infront of the passenger wheel. It's deeper and a bit louder, but pretty good. A 60 series will be louder, but it usually costs a lot more.

Remember you need to maintain enough backpressure for the engine to preform well, and to get a decent sound.

I've had the best luck with flowmasters. I've had magnaflows and they sounded like crap, too stock sounding. In my 91 s blazer and my 99 s-10, both with the 4.3 v6 i had flows installed and they both sounded like they had a v8 in them. Flows aren't overated they are just better.

Well its not on a ranger but this is what i would do go to your local advaced auto parts get a Dynomax muffler the super flo series i think i payed 80 bucks for it then i cut the old muffler off and put this one on then went to the local exhaust shop picked up some 3 inch pipe finshed it out in front of my rear passenger side tire witha 4 inch diesel tip it sounds awsome!! it's on a 2001 dodge dakota V8 though but still thats what i would do if i had ur truck!!!
