I went to the local dirt drags today w/ the old LT-R. My bike has some bolt on mods, a Twin Air filter, Cherry Bomb and a Motoworks full system. Anyway, I got beat by two YFZs (barely, by inches) even with a 13 tooth front sprocket. The YFZs both had HMF full systems... the teenage riders weighed probably 115lbs to my 175... but I'm not making excuses, the YFZ flat out ran me even with the two good starts I had.

Good Race. They were lighter than you so that can make a difference.:D

Isn't the rule of tumb for weight like 7 lbs. equals 1 horsepower? I know it's something like that, and thats a lot of horsepower your giving up with that kind of a weight difference.

i'm glad you are honest about it... im not trying to be a prick, but this is what i have said all along- that the yfz has the fastest engine out of the 3 450s...

Well losing by inches does not sound like getting "smoked" to me.

My definition of smoked is by 2 lengths or more in a drag race and a least half a track motocross.

Then why does Dirt Wheels, the biggest Yammie fan here, say the 450r is the quickest?

stock trim maybe some bolt on goodies i think the yammi is the best dragger.they do well at the local drags here.but modded i think the hondas are killing them.i dont think a yamaha has pulled a holeshot yet at the atva nationals.heck have they even made the podium?

What were they running on the filter side. If they primarily drag race, I bet they are running K&N. You have better filtration, but a K&N flows a LOT more air through it. The weight difference + a tad more air flow could be all it takes.

All 3 quads are pretty damn close these days IMHO. The zuk still has a ton of room for improvement though. I haven't even seen one with headwork and a new cam yet. ;)

I got smoked, meaning I got beat and I'm still salty about it. Then again, this was my first dirt drag since summer of 2003 on a KTM... so maybe I wasn't so good with the lights and the whole reacton thing.
Anyway, the YFZs are fast - the weight issue I'm sure played a part... but I'm going to try going back to the 14T front sprocket next time and see if it makes a difference.
Third in drags....
but I won the timed barrel races though!

Supposedly 7lbs = one HP

If that were true then it would take 51 hp to move the ltr..

360/7 = 51.43

If I'm being an idiot its because its 3 o'clock in the morning and im tired as hell... :blah:

its supposed to have to do with rider weight... i have heard this before, however, i do not know exactly how it is supposed to be applied... obviously it isnt just straight rider weight divided by 7, and subtract that...

for instance... i have a buddy who is 350lbs plus some, and he used to have a 400ex... well, divided by 7- thats 50 horses, and therefore the 400ex would have had negative horsepower...

i'd be interesting to know how exactly it is supposed to be supplied, or is just a myth, or...

This theory appllies for shaving weight.
Say an average guy (170-180) on a 450 quad is trying to shave weight off his bike. For every 7 pounds lost, it's like gaining 1 HP.

Same with rider weight... if a racer weighs 214lbs, and he exercises and drops down to 200lbs, he lost 14 pounds... which would be like adding 2 HP to your bike.

There are many variables that play a part in this.

Aye.. the benefit/penalty is on a curve, but at the median weight it's approx 1hp/7lbs. Going to an extreme one way or the other obviously changes the ratio.

Let's put it this way guys. Next time you go riding take 60lbs and strap it to the bike and see the difference it makes. If it was only inches you did damn good and it wasn't the bikes fault. Weight is a huge factor in drag racing. Especially on quads. Heck on street bikes 10 lbs is the equivalent of .10 in time.

Well, I went back to the damn dirt drags (because it's easy to win money in the barrell races) and ended up dragging again for fun. I beat a 450R pretty good, it was piped with a DMC and looked fairly stock besides that, but I still can't beat those damn Yamis.
Handling in the barrell races, there's no comparison... the Suz rules.

I think you posted earlier that your losing by inches but their eating your dust in the barrell races. I think you did a great job!
