Let me say right off the bat that this is not about trashing the z400. They are nice quads and fast. They just don't seem to be as fast as everybody is saying.
At Rabit Creek here in NE texas today at a sand drag event there were 8 quads in the "400ex class". Two z400s, three 400exs, two scramblers and a 250r.
Both z400s went out in the first round. One had a pipe but other than that they both seemed stock. Now it could be all about the driver but neither one was faster than my sons ex. He actually raced one in the first round, and beat him in both lanes. They raced best two out of three switching lanes between rounds.
My sons quad is not totally stock. He has a WB E series slip on, K&N filter, jet kit and a 14 tooth sprocket. And he seems to do well at drag racing.
My son went out in round two against one of the modded scramblers. Man those 400 two strokes scream (at least these two do) and with the auto trans they don't loose anything shifting. The overall winner was a modded 400ex.
