I was talking to bee about putting the 86 countershaft gears on my 89 tranny. he said you iether have to replace the 3rd and 4th counter or main shaft gears but he couldnt remember? Can anybody help me out? Zedicus?

i think its counter shaft. the trannys work out to being geared the same up to 5th and 6th. but 2nd gear is built a bit different and the shims apear to be different. what exactly are you wanting to accomplish by doing this? its far easier to swap out entire trannys then try and build a working hybrid, i would buy that 89 tranny if you wanted to part with it.

you have to replace2,3,5,6 on both main and counter shaft. They all have different teeth number from 86 vs 89. I just replaced almost every gear on my tranny so this is still fairly fresh in my mind. I dont think there is any difference in shims/ etc, but the shafts and shift drum have different part number depending on the year. But when I asked on here, no one could tell me what was different on an 86 drum versus an 89 drum.

bee said he ran the 86 5th and 6th CS gears because they are better for high speed dunes because it is geared taller. is that the main difference?

you can run a 89 main and counter with 1st, 2nd and either 3rd or 4th needs the correct year gear, the gear is c6 23t they both have 23 tooth for all years but the 86 dogbone alignment is rotated and if you dont use the 86 one the tranny will bind up...

this combo gives you the stronger lower gears of the 87-89 tranny with the top speed of the 86 tranny.

you need a strong motor to pull 5th and 6th wiht the 86 gears, thats why honda changed it, because it was a bit harsh...

i will say the 87-89 trannys have remarkable transition between gears, but if you want high speed for the same rpm's the 5th and 6th from an 86 will do ya right..

well thanks guys but now that im understanding what it does i dont think it will make too much diference for what i do......... im going to stay with the 89 CS gears.

87 still uses the old style tranny.... its a long rod old style tranny engine stock.... yeah i like the 88 - 89 style tranny better for playin around and trail riding.

Bee can you explain that more, by dogbone are you talking about the clutch forks or the shift drum?? After my rebuild the shift from 2-3 and 3-2 is a little notchy, but other shifts seem fine, I wonder if this has any thing to do with it. And nuetral is more of a pain to find than I remember

the dog bopnes are the parts of the gears that mesh together when being shifted has nothing to do with the forks or drum
