If I was you, I would wait till next year and get a left over 06. they are much faster than the 04 and 05's. JMO

Personally I couldnt wait to get an 06 because I wanted the estart. Also, do yourself a favor and sell your 400EX outright. You will get more $. It is worth the hassle.

I love my R's power but no matter what i've done to my R so far my ex out handles it. In the woods I think my ex is better. Get the mx track and start jumping and I know my R is better at that.

As for the estart R's I'd stay away myself. The main reason I got my R was to go back to kickstart like my 3wheelers always had.

yea I have heard nothing but complaints on the new 06's

the r outhandles the ex in the woods, no doubt. i had rec series elkas up front and gt thunder xc link/revale in the rear on the ex. the r turns better and is more predictable. as far as my 06 being a "problem child" i have no complaints except that the stock suspension needs to have a lower ride height and there was a slight bog if you nail the throttle real quick. i put int a 45 pilot jet and turned up the idle a hair and it went away. that is a temporary fix though. Lonestar_r put in an uni air filter, 170 mian jet, 52 leak jet, crf needle, a 48 pilot, and removed his baffle. the bog went away. that will be done to mine soon.

the only other problem i have is that my gas can is one of the non-spill types requied here in PA. using that, i knocked the white sleeve in the neck of my tank down inside of my tank. this happened just before i rode on saturday and i think it cause me some fuel flow problems. i have to fish it out before i ride on saturday

Both are on +2 stand travel aarms atm. both are running stock swingarms and my EX corners 100x's better than my R. My R jumps better yes.

My ex has elka's all around [maybe that is the difference]. My R has derisi's rebuilds and link which improved my r's handling alot. but still my ex can power through a turn much better. A freind says its from the less power the 416ex makes. That could be true.

On the jumping side my ex like to get crooked for no reason in the air. My r like to maybe drift a bit from side to side but the quad atleast stays nice and strait making landings much better even if im off the trail some. When my EX gets crooked I have to land and steer out of the twist if you know what I mean.

My R I have to brake really hard going into the turn and excellerate out of it. My ex I just fly into and out of the corner.

i bet your mid spring is too light...i bet it's a #600 mid, i had the same problem...to see if it's it use all four cross overs in each shock (2 per shock) and totally cross out the mid spring to transfer the weight to the main faster...if it corners better which it will you need a stiffer mid spring.

i now have elka elites all around and it corners like it's on rails.

I find them to be on the stiff side already, that is part of why I have to brake going into corners if it didn't bounce or stay planted as well as my ex does

I told derisi the same things I told elka when I bought the shocks on my EX. Dont get me wrong in all this my R handles alot better than it did in stock form, just its still got a higher center of gravity so it'll never corner like my ex does.

mine i thought was stiff but it was the main that was stiff went down to a 235 main and crossed out the mid ....it was diving in the corners and would bring it up on 2 wheels not matter how hard i'd lean even when i'd try an dcorner in ruts...at the MO GNCC i flipped 6 times on the first lap trying to corner too hard.

I found my ex slid too easily, it was hard to keep it straight.. my R is 100 times better, the higher feeling is almost better for me.

you're hearing them from the wrong people. just because a few people have problems doesnt mean everyone will. for every bad story you hear about the '06, theres probably 10 good stories somewhere else. ive had noththing but good come from my '06.

You say you race XC, I would stay away from the 06 and get an 05. There is a reason Chris Borich, Johnny Gallager, Chris Jenks, and many more are still on 05's. The 05s handle much better, the electric start takes to long for dead engine starts, the power curve hits to hard and cuases more fatigue than the 05, if you break your grab bar the exhuast goes with it, and there are many more reasons. I know people that bought the 06 and bought thousands in aftermarket parts to set it up and sold it 2 races later and bought an 05.
