no power at the coil

No power at the coil would point to a bad CDI, exciter coil, or pulse generator. It could also just be a bad connection at one of the wires related to those compenents.

Also, I think a peak voltage adapter is recommended for checking many of those components. A stadard digital mulitmeter may not register a reading since the signal is so brief [shrug].

i changed the cdi , but where is the exciter coil and the pulse generator
also i have a multimeter with hold on will that work?
thanks

I'm not sure on the multi meter.

The exciter coil is part of the stator. The pulse generator is right next to the stator. What you need to do is get a service manual. It will have precise instructions for how to test every electrical component.

I'd tell you what the procedures are, but they are detailed and I don't know what the spec values are or what color the applicable wires are on a 450r.

i have power to the key switch witch would point to the alternator puting out ??

No. That power is coming from your battery. The alternator (also called the stator) has two different "parts" to it: the lighting coil (which provides power to the regulator/rectifier which in turn charges the battery) and the excitor coil (which sends power directly to the CDI for ignition). The CDI then holds the power from the exiter coil until the pulse generator tells it to send that stored power to the ignition coil. The pulse generator is basically like a trigger that gets switched once every crank revolution.

maybe i should have told you its an 04 it has no battery

Whoops. My bad.

The only difference about what I said above is that the power coming out of the reg/rec just goes straight to your lighting circuit instead of going to a battery first.

The alternator still has the lighting coil and the excitor coil. They are independent so the excitor coil can go bad while the lighting coil still works and vice versa.
