What are the consequences of having too much or too little free sag in your suspension? i am currently setting up my shocks for a blend of MX and trail riding, and contemplating on how to adjust the travel. any suggestions? thanks!

As far as trail/XC you want enough ride height to make it through the rutted sections. Too low and you'll be dragging your quad through them. ;) Generally the swinger skid is your low point here.. but if you get too low.. the frame could drag also.

As far as MX is concerned.. you want enough height that you won't use up your shock travel on your quad from slow shaft speed compressions like hitting the approach face of a jump, or braking on a downhill turn.

I'm no expert though.. in any way shape or form.

I know some of the better racers can give you a LOT more informative information.

I like to run an 8" ride height on my 330ex. A good mix between the track and trail. (I don't have ZPS, though).

The good flattrackers could really help you out here. There's a point even for them where too low is bad.
