You guys know that most of the time aftermarket parts don't up the value...

bought it for $2500, broke a bunch of crap, replaced other stuff just cause, parts total is probably over $2000 by now so only about $4500 as of now but will be alot more by next summer.

yupp, personally i would rather buy a fairly stock quad and do it how i want. Built not bought is the only way. but most people dont add stuff to up the value, they do it for looks/performance.

since i like my machines stock.... they cost me very minimal to run, only when they f**k up, or something. If you have $20,000 dollars of your money into an ATV you need help :eek2:

You need help if you dump 20 grand into a quad that you'll use for the weekend trailride. But for racing you NEED that 20,000 worth of parts..

Just what in hell are you talking about here son?

07-01-2006, 09:37 PM
Because if the shop screws up working on his 4-wheeler, he can get it redone..Sometimes for free. If you screw up on your on 4-wheeler, you're just screwed. I'd feel safer letting the people who have gone to college to mess around with my engine.

just read what I quoted. He is prob spending more on labor than mods. Its not that hard to learn how to do and I have never had a problem with my engines.

07-02-2006, 12:57 PM
yes but you must admit the first time you tear apart your own motor, you are a bit nervous and you obviously want it to run again...the best way to learn about motors is from a close friend or relative that has experience...if you dont have that then you will know next to nothing about motors....

i remember i taught my friend the basics about motors and how to rebuild top ends and what parts were called and what not, he used to think that a 4 stroke meant it had 4 cylenders and each cylender was a different motor...lol...but a few months later he was tearing his banshee apart, and putting new pistons in her and putting it back together...anyone can learn it, you just have to be taught somewhere...i would encourage anyone to learn more about their quad or dirt bikes

What you've invested and what it's worth resale are two TOTALLY different things.

Personally, I think my 400EX is worth bugger all for resale.

And I would say if you do not understand the internals of the 4-cycle engine, I would not attempt a rebuild unless you have someone with some knowledge of engines with you. If you don't, you can quickly learn how the fourstroke motors work by doing it with an experienced person on hand. This is the most effective way of learning it in my opinion. I am hands on, so I learn best doing it.

2003 Lonestar 250R- $1750 for the '86 that it started as, about $15000 to build.

2001 Lonestar 250R- $1200 for the '86 starter, about $10000 to build.

Restored 86 TRX250R- $800 for initial quad, $9000 in OEM parts (and worth every penny:D )

2004 TRX450R- $6500 (it was one of the first ones out, so I paid dearly), $4500 in aftermarket parts.

Yes, aftermarket parts don't necessarily translate into higher resale values, but I take this thread as the overall cost you put into your quad.

With that said, I have easily $20,000+ overall into my 2000 400EX......scary to think about but that's over the span of 6 years so it's really not all that crazy :p

Was it all worth it??? HELL YES!!!

Original price of the quad-$4900+ $2660 in mods= one he!! of a high price for a 300ex.:eek2: And to think... if I sold it as it sits I would be lucky to get $2600 for it after 6 years.:ermm: At least it will make a nice hand me down for my son.
