Well, it seems like every time I start my grandmas mower, it backfires like crazy. Just one huge BAM. What could be the problem for this?

Take off the air cleaner and spray carb cleaner down into the carburetor. There's better than a 50/50 chance that will clear it up. And while your at it make sure the gas is fresh and the air filter is clean.
